Ongoing problem. The area never looks sore just bald and dry.
Happened last winter and I bought a Snuggy hood and a bossy bibs mane saver, neither helped.
Got better over summer, now pretty bad again.
All my rugs are removable neck and I had been saying it’s the binding on the rug but of course it isn’t, the neck sits higher than the withers.
I’ve been changing his turnout over night which I don’t usually do but to see if a lighter combo stable rug would help. I *think it has slightly.
I had ordered a combo turnout but don’t really need another, he’s well enough kitted out.
Now I’ve confirmed for sure it’s not the binding I’m a bit lost!
Why and any ideas?

When my high withered TB had wither rubs (broken skin) I bought some fleecy material and made a fairly thick pad by doubling/tripling it over on itself and sewing these into all his rugs, he never got a rub again

When I had that problem I used one of these as it lifted the rug off the wither. You can also make your own by sowing on sponges to a normal bib:

I find it's better to cut a hole in the foam so the wither pokes through so no pressure at all, you can make your own custom one with some foam or a car sponge.

This one has two separate pieces of foam either side of the wither so has the same effect to lift the rug off the wither 🙂

I can’t sew. Solved it by putting a poly pad at the wither and then folding it back over the top Of the rug. This distributed the pressure that would normally pull down on the wither.

These work in turnout as well unless the horse has a massive hoon around and a roll. 90% of the time it stays in place.

As you can see my pony is grey ( white).
I stitched velcro or D rings as necessary on the Wug and fitted a neck on.
😂 so it is! My levels of observation are pretty poor!
That might also be a plan then, I’m going to try the bib ideas above first having kitted said horse out in Horseware only a year ago! Keen not to have to re-buy actual rugs.
I’m wondering having looked at the links above if I can stitch sponge onto the Bossy mane saver as that wasn’t cheap either and would mean it was less of a waste!

I’m always in favour of money saving.
If you decide to put attachments on to your rugs measure carefully especially the velcro flap ones. If you have Wugs the fastenings fit a little further back.
It is annoying having to unpick and redo. (I know )

Luckily for me I have a very fantastic neighbour who does amazing rug repairs and alterations so I’d call her in!
