Rugs that are WATERPROOF?!

I’ve just bought the fal rug complete system, seemed quite good value for money and I’m tired of his horseware rugs looking like mini skirts lol. Fal seem to have really good review and I think production is back in England. So I’ll soon be selling a 6’6 rhino MW wug lol.

I’ve never had a 50g of any brand leak, but any rain sheets ie. no fills have always leaked in heavy rain.

I am a sales rep for a rug manufacturer, and I would suggest you try a 50g turnout rather than 0g.

As a previous poster mentioned, the fabric sits right against the horse's back, so a 0g will never be as waterproof as something with a fill in it. Also, they aren't breathable - imagine putting a waterproof coat on with nothing underneath - you'd get all sticky and revolting. This is similar to what happens if a horse gets warm in a 0g turnout.

I would definitely recommend a 50g, and if your horse is living out you want a 1200 denier or above. 600d is waterproof, but won't be as strong as the higher deniers, and will rip more easily.

If you have any more questions please feel free to PM me. Rugs are my life haha!

I see this but have never had an issue and it seems plenty breathable given that I have been known to put it on after hunting (and he is a sweaty beast!)

Err, of course a no fill rug can be waterproof if it's got a decent waterproof outer layer like all the Rambos do. And of course it will be breathable too, it's the same material. Even no fills have a separate thin nylon lining, don't they, or do the cheapies skimp on this?

I only know Rambo and Rhinos. I bought a Shires once for the pretty print design, never again, so flimsy.

I did end up with a non breathable once bought at a christmas equine fair thing. They wore them once and were quickly chucked back in the rug tub to be the clean ones we took to chuck on at shows...

They will breathe to a certain extent, but they will never be as breathable as a rug with a fill. I work for one of the big companies mentioned, and our rugs have been quoted throughout this thread as being waterproof in the 0g, but it is worth knowing.

Not trying to discount anyone's experience - I have 0g rugs from the company I work for and several others and have never had a problem with them leaking, so I think as with lots of things it can vary depending on usage etc.

:)

ETA - materials will also differ even in the same denier. For instance, one of our rugs is 1200D with Ripstop, the other is 1200D with Triple Diamond Weave - the latter will be tougher and less likely to tear based on the extra features of the material. Rugs are a minefield. I had no idea the level of science and technical stuff I was letting myself in for when I applied for my job, even as a well established rug hoarder!

My Weatherbeeta 0g 1200D leaks in very heavy rain (West of Ireland heavy)
Shires Tempest 0g 600D doesn't 🤔 maybe it's down to the fit on a particular horse?

The best no fill rug I ever bought was my Shires Highlander combo. Had it for several years now and it never leaks. It also has shoulder gusssets, clips at the front and a huge tail flap - ticks all my rug requirements!

Whereas my one of those is only light shower proof. I wonder whether Tihama has a point. My draft is an odd shape and pretty much every rainsheet he's ever had had leaked!!

I've a Weatherbeta no fill which hasn't been worn much over the last couple of years. I put it on earlier this autumn and it leaked. I think Rambo Duos are the best. My last horse lived in one from using it unlined at the start of autumn to putting in a 300 gm liner in the very cold weather. She wore it for years and it never leaked.
