Can anyone recommend a light weight turn out rug with a high or half neck that will fit a heavyweight cob? I seem to have a fitting problem with every rug we have tried. Most common problems are rubbing on the neck and mane with standard neck rugs because they seem to be madedesigned with a TB build in mind. The best fit so far is Geetac combo although the neck is too long and rubs on his ears (sigh) and all their combo rugs have fill. As my horse is unclipped he needs a lightweight so I can keep him dry and at least part of him clean! he doesn't need to be any warmer. What do other cob owners find fits their hairy beasties best?

My lad is clipped, and is in a medium weight Mark Todd (one size too large as a gift !) and I can't rate it highly enough. Not sure what else they do, as usually out of my price range, but it is a fab rug.

My cob has Weatherbeeta rugs - they are about the only rugs that don't seem to rub him or pull back so they are tight on the chest. They are are seamless on the withers and the necks aren't so long that they touch his ears once he's eating. FAL seem to be a good fit for a wide chest, but the only combo rugs I could find had seams on the withers which are no good for my horse as they end up rubbing his withers raw.

He also fits Shires Tempest nicely, they're very roomy round the shoulders. I have an Amigo rainsheet, very good fit, too.

Thanks for this. I have found Mark Todd lightweight combos for £60 on ebay so just about doable for me. Is your horse a heavyweight? The chest on some rugs won't even close properly on my horse

The neck buckle closure is on the last hole, or second to last, but there is masses of room round the chest, and he is on the tightest setting there. That is on a 6'3 (14.3 hh - 500 kilos H/W pony). It's got good darts at the shoulders, and hasn't rubbed his (3 ft long) mane at all. He is heavyweight, and has really chunked out over the last year, going from 5'9 to 6 foot odd.

The rug has been a revelation for us - I usually use Amigo or Weatherbeata, but will save up and buy this one again if I need to. I am so grateful to the lady that gave it to me :)

I must get a piccie of him in it. It may look a bit big, but I have never had him so weather proof.

Thanks for all this help. I would love to see a piccie of him in his rug - he looks gorgeous. Am deeply envious of the mane - my boy has sweet itch and this last summer he got bitten and I made the decision to cut off his mane so I could treat the bites. Normally his Boett rug (which also rubs his mane!) protects him but somehow he got bitten anyway.

I second Weatherbeta, I have 2 x combos (landa) , I have a no fill and a medium weight. My boy is a very chunky heavyweight 14.1 and the landa is true to size, he measures 5ft 6 and the 5ft 6 actually fits (on second hole), no need to go up a size to get round his chest. My daughters 15.1 heavy weight had weatherbeta standard neck (hogged so no mane issues) and a Shires typhoon, again anple round the chest. Both makes are durable and reasonably priced.

My boy also has a loooong mane and has had no rubbage!

I have a weatherbeeta joules rug, which fits my chunky monkey lovely. However, in my opinion you can't ebay premier equine on quality, reliability or fit, yes they are pricey but well worth the investment, a they last forever!!

I have a very broad mare who I struggled to find rugs to fit. She's only 14.3 but v v wide. Rhino and rambo arent bad but still not that deep around her, my favourite discovery was the.big horse shop. Make rugs designed for heavy types so plenty of room round the chest and they dont look like miniskirts! Theyre just going into their 3rd winter and look brand new, bar rather muddy! They've got a big sale on right now which makes them more affordable, theyve also got a seconds section.

Another recommendation for Axiom on eBay . Really deep rugs. My boy was really chubby a year or so ago and they fitted him well then. This year he's lost the weight thankfully and I have bags of room in the rug, but its nice enough to cover the majority of his belly and lots of room in the neck.

Also weatherbeetas these days I've found are really deep and generous. Wishing I'd gone down a size for my latest ones!

My cob wears an Amigo combo...he's 15.1hh and built like a brick outhouse. This rug fits like a glove and he has no rubs and a full mane

Am a huge Mark Todd fan for my Section D; though the rugs that I have for her have detachable neck covers (which I find far more versatile and useful). The rugs are generously cut for big shoulders and bums! Rugs NEVER rub. Nice and deep, and last well.
