I bought a Friesian back in May 14.3hh, he is a real sweety. Typically I left buying rugs for him till last minute. Now I can't find anything that fits him at all. He seems to fit a 6'3 or 6'6, but because of his depth from wither to chest, nothing fits around his chest, everything is far to tight. Anybody got any ideas? Luckily he is stabled at night, but he is out in this awful rain at the moment and it;s a real worry.

Thanks for that, I have just remembered that about 10 yrs ago, i bought an expander to fit a rambo rug (Previously had a stocky horse with similar problems), and it initially looked great, but by the time the horse had come in at night, the whole rug had just shifted backwards and was still as tight around the chest. Is there any other Friesian owners out there with same problems??

Try the Fal rugs. We don’t have a Friesian but we do have a bulky 16’3 IDx and they are the only rugs that give enough material at the front to fit her chest.

Cheers for that, Blimey, they are quite pricey aren't they. Still needs must and all that, after all, thats what credit cards are for! Thank you, I will try a Fal rug. Someone else suggested a horseware rug, apparently they come up bigger round the chest aswell, I might give them a go also. Thanks JoBo.

FWIW, although the FALs are pricey, they are really tough, well made & stay waterproof. I think they're worth the investment.

Haven't got a cob - the horse in my avatar was an ISH but had more of an ID build - 17hh & 690 kg. Ie quite strapping. He took a 6 ft 9 rug & there was enough room around the chest & it was also deep enough at the sides which not all rugs are.

I *think* FAL do a special size/fitting for heavier set horses with more room around the chest / neck but I can't rem what it's called or whether it's my imagination!

Just had a google & found this on a saddlery website...

"Extra Neck Sizes have an additional 3" of material incorporated within each side of the neck, therefore extending the chest by 6", i.e. when fitting a 63" Extra Neck the back length will remain a 6’3" length but the bottom length will be a 66" length. FAL is the only manufacturer in the world offering this service."

Hope that helps?

i have the fal warrior and commander and one of there cheaper slumberdowns fal are deffo the best for the bigger broader horse or pony i also have a rambo duo for her but it is tighter her shoulders and withers .. fal all the way for me !

If you are looking for something a little cheaper than the Fal, Masta fit big chested horses really well and we have never had any leakage, rubs etc with them.

I have used Weatherbeetat turnout and stable rugs for my mare for the last couple of years, I have similar problems to you - rug here - you can get them with or without neck. She is usually in a 6 foot nine which fits beautifully, she is around 16.1hh

Fal are great but expensive but they do last so much longer and fit so well. The weatherbeata Tarka is a little cheaper and has a longer side that wraps under the belly keeping them loveyly and snuggly. Mine are 17.1 and 16.3. xx

dont use fal slumberdown if you are after good fitting round the chest. Bought one for my horse who is in 6ft9 rugs, rubbed his shoulders within one day of having it on

Hi we converted from horseware to weatherbeeta about 3 years ago and have been really pleased however for our new 14h show hunter i splashed out on a Rambo H/W Turnout- the red and silver one,and a H/W stable rug. She has a massive front and takes a 5'9 its been lovely and well worth the money! Ibought her a weatherbeeta combo under rug in 5'9 and can barely fasten the front! Even though they are pricey I am reverting to rambo she is sooooo snugly and they dont move. Also the rambos i bought 8 years ago for my horse are still going strong so the cost becomes less important
