I was wondering as the other morning was bitterly cold and my girlie as of end Aug has been in a medium stable rug with neck as I dont like to clip nor do I like fluffy horses so anyhow shes always rugged with medium weight turn out with neck and some days so far have bee bitter so had a fleec on to.
Well some of the other horses up the yard granted have coats but they dont even have a light weight on and it shocked me? One horse has a trace clip and still naked? Me thinks this person clipped beacuse it looks good not for a reason.

What are you guys all doing?

You are in a heavy weight with fleece already!!!!!
What the hell are you going to do come the real winter, snow etc?
My boy is out 24/7, rugless, hasn't fluffed up yet and is fine.

I'm not rugging at all yet. What are you going to do when it really gets cold?

I did my 1st clip today so he is obviously rugged now.
Last week when in outdoor stables at Weston Park, my mare had a summer sheet, LW rug, HW necked stable rug, hood and bandages! She wasnt clipped yet!
Normally mine in indoor stables they are in MW/LW until clipped.

What will I do when it gets really cold?
They will get thicker rugs and be layered up.
They are never sweating and have good coats all year round, it is simply a matter of what they are used to.

You are over rugging your horse. My mare who lives out has a LW turn out on at night and is naked during the day unless it is wet. My other 2 have had a LW stable rug on for the last week and a half. They go out naked unless it is wet when they have LW turn outs on.

they are all still out naked, and for as long as possible too!The cold is not a problem, but once it starts raining heavily, and when iv clipped them, they will have LW's on, and go from there.

mine are naked, 2 of them will get a lightweight if it starts tipping down persistently and little ponio runs away at the sight of any type of rug so she will remain naked

My chap (who is a real wimp) is out in a lightweight turnout in the day and a lightweight stable rug at night.

His field companion however is clipped (trace) as he is a hot boy and is out naked during the day and is naked overnight. She didn't clip because it looks good, but because he is geniunely a hot horse who would otherwise be sweating!

During the day, Scoobs just wears his sweet itch rug to stop him rubbing his bum raw. At night he wears a medium weight turnout with a neck, because he's fully clipped and he lives out. Of the stabled horses, the clipped ones wear stable quilt things at night (I'm so knowledgeable

) and the hairy ones go naked.

All naked

. The clipped cobs grew coats pretty quick - the days were warm enough that they didn't need rugs and they're not losing any weight so the nights can't be too bad!

The weather is too changeable! Today my fleece was on and off like a yo-yo.

The horses that live out are unrugged and will remain so throughout the winter. The ones that go out during the day and in at night are currently uncipped and unrugged. The ones that come in during the day and out at night are clipped and have medium weight rugs on at night. I do believe that a horse is able to keep itself warmer if it is able to fluff it's coat up rather than rugging and laying the coat flat.

Unclipped AND rugged?! Why?

What on earth will your horse wear come winter?!

3 of mine were sweating just now when I went to check on them and my naked TB was toasty warm

Why wouldn't you want to clip your horse? How can you keep your horse clean, ride them and keep them looking smart if you don't clip them? I hate hairy, sweaty horses

My old bot isnt clipped and he is wearing a MW stable with a neck and sometimes a fleece underneath. And in the day a LW or MW depending on the weather. He is used to being well rugged and i dont like to let him get too much of a coat and he doesnt need to be clipped.
In answer to what will i do in winter, i will layer him up, hes got enough rugs to have a choice also have hoods, bandages etc.
I think its unfair to tell people they have over rugged there horses when you do not know the horses.

Mine is still unclipped at the mo and is out in the day with a LW turnout or naked and when she is in at night she has had a cotton sheet or LW stable rug on.

Why dont you clip instead? Horses are designed to warm themselves up not cool themselves down so its a bad idea to over rug them especially this early in the year. It isnt good for their body temperature regulation.

Naked, unclipped at the mo and too hot. Its been 16 degrees here today. Will clip in the next fortnight, then problably a LW on 24/7 til it gets colder.

as i said..to add..All the stud mares, stallions and foals are out on tack naked all year round...its just the ones in work who have LW rugs on if they are in hard work or clipped...We have some horses in hard work and not clipped, as they are fit enough, and dont sweat up, so they stay out naked and uncliped

I do have to agree here....... you are over rugging, nd for YOUR own benefit, as you "dont do clipping or fluffy horses"

I think its actually quite mean......

Ours are still out 24/7 and get a LW turnout/rainsheet on at night if the weather forecast says its gonna be really wet.... otherwise they are naked, and are a mixture of warmbloods, TB's, welsh ... actually the welsh hasnt even seen a rug yet.......
If they had to be in at night there would be now way I would be rugging yet........... what happens when it chucks it down with snow again, or temps are -5 at night- your horse will have to be wearing shed loads of rugs, which IMO cant be comfy!

Mine started coming in 2days ago at night, my sec a has his fly rug on all the time, and teddi has a sheet on at night, but I turned him out 2day naked, felt bad after I got home thinking he prob cold after having rug on at night, but went down 2 get him in and he was happy as, gonna get him a lightweight turnout tomorrow as don't want him out in his medium until he's clipped! But then he's only having a trace clip, so prob won't need it, but he will due 2 my guilt lol! X x

Layering can be very uncomfortable for horses. It's not fair to rug to (try) to prevent coat growth becasue you don't like hairy hosrse and won't clip.
Rugging doesn't prevent coat growth anyhow.

Unclipped and naked
laugh.gif
... and long may she remain that way

Funny, 'cause I was thinking how mild it's been, we've only had one nippy night and even then we didn't have a frost.

I went to the feed merchant which is also a livery yard and all the horses there were out with rugs on, I was

. We are 7 miles up the road and none on the yard I'm at were rugged. Some are now mind you as the clippers appear to have been working overtime.

Totally agree! I know wimpy old (we are talking 30+) arabs who live out all year round with a heavyweight on and nothing more and doing very well.
It amazes me how many people think that if a horse is cold it gets hairy - err nope. It's to do with the ammount of sunshine, so carry on rugging, its not going to make a difference, except to your horse who is going to be hot and uncomfortable.
This is one of my personal bugbears, as you can probably tell!

It's been so nice here over the last couple of days my 3 clipped horses have been out without their rugs from mid morning to mid afternoon then wearing a fairly lightweight stable rug or turn out at night. They all feel very cosy at the moment as it's been so mild of late.

Mine is in a LW/MW (Its slightly thicker than a LW but not as thick as a M/W) turnout day and night. Mainly because she is abit underweight so I want her energy going on trying to keep warm instead of building herself up.
