I agree totally with your last bit, there are difference of opinions and reasons for everyone.
It also, I guess depends on which part of the country you live, if you have sufficient grazing/shelter, what breed and age of each horse.
My old horse before i had him PTS 3 wks ago was 29 years old, ex racer who was looking super after a summer of grass. However, our grass soon disappeared with the lack of rain and within 2 days was dropping weight.
He was also wearing a heavy weight NZ at night to keep him warm (he was out at night still along with my other boys who at the time were wearing lightweights).
I also agree that everyone (hopefully) are trying to do the best for their equine friends, however I do have to question one or two...normally with just a raised eyebrow. Unless neddy is looking distressed under the mountain of heavy weight rugs on the unclipped hardy hairy cob or the extra lean TB who is shivering in the corner of his field soaked to the skin, I kinda let them get on with it.
