I am loosing the will to live with my sensitive skinned cob!!

I bought him last winter and had been turned away for 6 mnths so was an unclipped 'yak', with rain scald on both shoulders. On advice from my vet I clipped him so could treat the rain scald, and managed to get it mainly under control, although it would flare up every now and then.

The next problem I had was cyst like lumps coming up under his saddle which my saddler put down to blocked pores caused by overheating from sheepskin numnahs. I was advised to wash his back off with hibiscrub any time he sweated and to only use cotton numnahs. He had to have several weeks of work, and these lumps only really healed once spring arrived when he was turned out un-rugged in the spring.

Over the summer I have had no real skin problems. However I clipped him last week in preparation for hunting and therefore put a lightweight rain sheet on him. I have tried not to over rug him, but with the changeable weather today I left it on. He must have sweated under it as when I bought him in tonight he has a heat rash all up his spine, with a couple of lumps looking suspiciously cyst like again.

He is currently in Weatherbeeta rugs which although fit his stocky frame perfectly, have a nylon lining, so am wondering if the lining is causing him to sweat and the in turn making his pores block again.

So to cut a long story short does any one know of a rug range that is cotton lined? Also does anyone else have similiar problems and if so how do you deal with it?! I have left him in tonight without a rug on to let his skin breathe, but am now frightened to turn him out tomorrow without a rug in case the rain scald returns - argghh!!

Thanks in advance!

My boy has these cyst like spots. They look like spots with heads on but when you pick them off they just leave a hole. Have never managed to get rid of them in the 6 years he's had them

im sure this is not helpfull: but my weatherbeeta rain sheet/lightweight rug is cotton lined??!! it is pretty old though, so they have probably changed!!

i just sold a wee rhinegold sheet- it was cotton lined- maybe look into them?

good luck- sounds like a bloomin nightmare!! :( xx

A lot of the Bucas rugs are cotton/fleece lined. They have a wide temperature range as well so although dear to buy, they are quite versatile.

Wash him all over very thoroughly with hand hot water and Nizoral - that will get rid of any sebasceous type problems, any budding rain scald and dandruff if the poor lad has that too.

I've just been costing making a cotton lining for mine for the summer as it is ddefinately better on the skin.

What abouot a jute rug under his other rugs. Have the D's fitted so that you only need one set of leg straps.

Awh poor boy!!
I myself hate the newer more fashionable nylon lined rugs, i think they promote sweating and contrary to belief, they do not prevent rubs. Cant stand the things!

I think www.ftsrugs.co.uk do cotton lined, however, i think this is for part of their range, so if you sent them an email im sure theyd be happy to help you :)

Good luck though, it must be so hard!

Thanks for all your sympathy and advice!! I will have a look at your suggestions and was wondering about getting a cotton summer sheet to use as an under liner to any rugs he has on - however I am then worrying about him over heating.....

I thought cob's were meant to be hardy!

Sidney, did u find cotton lined rugs? I have exactly the same problem with my cob. I am looking for a waterproof cotton lined sheet. Can u help.

Chico I have just bought a lightweight maxwell mill rug off ebay which is cotton lined and 1000 denier, essential for my serial rug ripper - total bargain price

almost all the robinsons rugs are cotton lined - the only one I've had from them has been good quality and they're not too expensive
