Rugs with neck attachments

I'm thinking of buying a turnout rug with a neck attachment for my tb gelding who will be having his first winter out this year. But there seem to be so many types!

Some have the neck as a part of the rug, a sort of all in one piece rug, and some have the neck attached by velcro and/or straps. Do they rub their mane? Or do they ever leak or come off?

Can anyone recommend a make or design? I haven't bought a rug for years so sorry about all the questions! Thanks.
 
Ones with attached necks are better I find, but obvioulsy its a problem that you cannot use the rug without the neck. The ones attached by straps tend to blow forward and let wind and rain onto the neck. Ideally would be a hood attached by a zip, but not many make them, only Fal I think. My full necj rubs his mane a little.
 
We have the Weatherbeeta full neck rugs and love them, they fit ours really well, don't rub and keep them nice and warm
I also have an Olympian with a neck that can attach but leaks are created where the neck part attaches to the rug so this rug is not used as much
 
I dont have problems with my full neck turnouts rubbing my horse's mane... I have had problems with full neck stable rugs (specifically under rugs) rubbing his mane.

In terms of fixed / detachable necks... Both my turnouts have the detachable necks and they're both horseware rambos. The necks attach with two very heavy duty strips of velcro at either side of the neck. Ive never had any issues with these and it gives the flexibility of taking the neck cover off if needed. They've certainly never slipped!

Out of those two, Id choose the duo since you have the flexibility of a middle weight and heavy weight rug in one.. Also the fact that you can wash the damn thing at home is fantastic!
 
If you want to PM direct, I can give you the name and number of a friend who has just started a business selling rugs and I know they are selling a lot of them to Newmarket trainers for the TB racehorses. Prices are very cheap and I'm sure they would be able to help you out. As far as attachments go, DON'T go for one with a zip - they go rusty and mud sticks in them and you can't get them undone. Hope this helps. My friends are based a few miles from Newmarket but can send a CD of what they sell and you can order from them.
 
My lad has rugs with detachable neck covers and we have no problems with leekage at all. Providing you have the correct size neck cover for the rug it should be alright. Some people don't get the right size & that's when problems occur. His mane stays in good order aswell, no rubbing at all.
 
Fal Ultimate Vikings. That's what most of mine are. The neck attachments are by heavy duty zips with a velcro covering.

I did use the neck attachments when I was in England (all that mud you know!) and they never rubbed their manes, however over here in Canada I never use them on any of mine, LOL!!
 
i always buy ones that have hoods that just clip on - any other rubs the manes out of my two. But mine do both have large necks. Other people on my yard use the fixed neck ones and some get mane loss and others dont..........think it depends on your horse really. If hes quite fine with a thin neck then a fixed neck wil be ok.

Mine never ever leak or come in with wet necks. Mine have the mark todd middle weights and the premier equine HWs.
 
In the past I always bought Weatherbeata rugs with separate necks but I find the velco which attaches the hood soon loses it 'stickiness' and I spent many a night last year trailing the field looking for a mud coloured hood in the mud!

I bougth this rug 3 weeks ago and I have to say it is FANTASTIC!!!!

The hood is really secure but is still easy to take off and put on and it doesn't leak at all. My boy is super toasty in it too.

Rugs have to be robust for my lad as his friends and they love nothing better than having a tug of war holding onto each others neck hoods. Thankfully this rug seems up to the job as there is not a mark on it.

Full neck rugs rub my lads mane off but neck cover attachments don't - as PG noted though my lad has got a deep neck.

OH's mare is lighter built with a smaller skinnier neck (working on it!) and doesn't rub in full necks
 
I have wetherbeeta landa combo (fixed neck). I really like it and have no problems with it rubbing his mane.

I also have a pessoa HW with detachable neck although I have no problems with it I prefer the fixed neck.
 
I have the Rambo Duo with separate neck cover - the neck cover is fastened to the rug with velcro - I've not had any problems with it - it never moves or lets rain. Have also got Rhino rugs with attached neck covers - also good but it did rub one of my mares manes a little.
 
I also have a Weatherbeeta Landa and it's lovely. Bought it last year and it's fits really well. It has washed lovely this year and stays in place on my fidgety mare. No signs of mane/chest rubbing. One of the best value combo rugs around and I double up with a cheap stable rug when Maggie is clipped out in new year.
 
I have a Rambo duo and to be honest the is a fantastic rug no rubbing as yet compared to the Olympian i brought last year the neck cover kept sliding forward lost count of times if was off to be adjusted, rubbed mane etc.
 
I have the same as tierra, Rambo Duo ... u now can get different weight linings too, My horse's a TB and he loves it! As he's a Mud monster the only mud i found were around his ears/face/legs no where else. Doesn't leak (touch wood) i have always had Rhinos/rambos/and now amigos for years and years... (first one is 12 years ago and lasted 7 years)...

TB did have half neck last year and it did rub a bit but he's quite high in the head and the rug is slightly straight cut. Hence he got the duo this year.
 
I have 2 x Weatherbeeta turnouts 1 Weatherbeeta stable rug and 1 x Horsewear Rhino turnout all with necks. The Weatherbeetas are the best, the Rhino is warm and the chest straps are quick to do but the Weatherbeetas are much deeper and have far better tail flaps. Definately my favourite for my TB they fit her so well. She did lose a bit of mane last year but not a huge amount. Apparently the detachable necks can fit high withered horses better than the fixed neck but all my rugs are fixed necks so can't really advise on that one.
 
Both my boys have Rambo Supreme's. The neck is detachable which make them flexible, as you can remove if you need. I've had no problems with mane rubbing, moving or leaking with either of them(they are both different shapes!) & would def recommend. The only mud they manage to get on themselves is their legs or face!
 
Thanks everyone, I'm going to go for one with an attached neck as he's out 24/7, prob the weatherbeeta (as these fit him well) or the Fal. Thanks again for the suggestions.
 
i bought my first integral neck rug this winter - its really good, absolutely does not rub (satiny lining). i think it could have a little more adjustment in the neck fastenings if i can think of a fault

(its a weatherbeeta)
