Ok so just checked weather forecast and its going to be 5 degrees tonight. Wondering whether to get the warmer rugs out for my tb!!

What temperature do you all decide to get the medium weights out? I usually go on what it feels like in the evening, but obviously its a lot colder at 3am than it is at 7pm when I turn them out.

at night he's currently in a lightweight, and occasionally chucking a fleece underneath if it gets below 10. daytime usually just in lightweight or naked. Field is on the side of a hill and has limited natural shelter (a few trees at the top)

Going to try not to clip this year as he doesn't get sweaty whilst ridden and I usually ride in the evenings so want him to comfortable. Therefor I don't want him to get seriously fluffy, hence the temptation to rug up rather thanr risk him get cold.

hmmmmmmm what are your thoughts?

I was wondering whether to put a mediumweight on my Thoroughbred this morning. He lives out and just has a rain sheet on the moment. It was wet and windy but when I felt under his rug he was as warm as toast so I'll have to postpone putting the lovely new rug on for a bit longer.
It depends on the horse. I always feel under the rug at different times of the day. If they still feel warm at night then I don't put a thicker rug on until they need it. We love to see our horses wrapped up in cosy rugs when we're feeling cold but they don't feel the cold as much as us so we just have to take notice of what they want.

My boy is in what I was told was a medium but I'm not convinced really by that. The only other rug I have at the moment is one with no lining in or his 380g turnout. I guess I could put his fleece on underneath the turnout. :)

My mare is still in a rain sheet. I am trying this year to leave off the medium weight until it is freezing. She hangs onto her weight even in winter and I would prefer her to loose a few pounds this year before next spring.

It was 2 degrees here at 4am this morning in the Highlands so my TB & WelshxTB were both sporting there medium weights on.
My TB has had her medium weight on for a few weeks now as it's been so bitter up here.

XxX

My TB will have a mediumweight on tonight as his field gets mighty chilly when the wind sweeps across it. Am trying to keep his extra weight on now as moving in a few weeks and it'll fall off with the stress of it all!
If your horse feels a bit chilly then pop the m/weight on, if not then the l/weiht and a fleece will probably suffice - mine is already starting to get fluffy so keeps himself a bit warmer now.

Both my arabs are in 100g rugs now. Its 6degrees with very heavy rain- enough for flooding. They have a rain sheet on too as rugs just not keeping water out!

Where do you live? It gonna be 9 degrees in Hereford tonight so not to bad. If your TB loses weight easily then i would put MW on if not then lighweight and fleece x

Mine is still in a sheet at the moment, but if it is going to drop under 10 degrees, then will pop something underneath it to keep him a bit warmer. I don't think he is ready for his 250gm one yet though?

Saying that, just checked weather and says it is going to be 7 degress tonight, so will put a fleece underneath.

My elderly TB has been in a rain sheet the last few nights, but as it will be colder the next few nights he will have his 100g full neck turnout. He is living out and has access to a nice field shelter. He had a few days in this rug a few weeks ago when the weather was foul.

I am in east anglia if that helps!

ah phew glad i'm not the only one then. I live on the South coast so it just feels so early to be putting winter rugs on. And knew I should of gone and brought a 100g rugs as that would be perfect for tonight. But I convinced myself I didn't need to buy it :-)

I'll sleep a lot sounder knowing he's all snuggled up though. oh dear I'm so sappy!!

You DO need to buy the 100g rug, I don;t know how I managed without it! Weatherbeeta Landa I think mine is, I have the 100g and the 200g. And thena load of heavier ones.

i agree - you do need 100g rug :p I just ordered another one as i had my two horses sharing the ONE 100g rug i have... thinking by the time my hardier arab needed 100g, my softer oldie would be moving up to 200g.. not the case so now have two ... mine is ruggles - with detachable neck rug. have one rug with the ruggle neck, and the other rug with an old masta neck rug that is too big for the masta rug i have (horse needs a small and its a medium so with it set back on the ruggles it fits :D)

well if my boy was stopping out tonight he would have his heavyweight on, its going to be 5 tonight but you have to remember the wind, here winds are going to be 20mph so it makes it feel alot colder. im bringing him in tonight as it has been a horrid day

hehe your not meant to persuade me to buy even more rugs!!

Well got up there and its gale force winds, its even bent the electric fencing. Have been brave and left them out :-( Everybody else on yard is still out out and they're not in stables next to each other so would be alone and so think they'd be happier outside.

can't believe how quick winter has suddenly come on. Or maybe its just another week of freak weather and it'll warm up again.

bushbaby do you mind me asking you who the racehorse is in your Sig? just I know a few people who worked for the owner and the jockeys who rode for him. Sorry nothing to do with your question but rug away!

Cruel mummy here, no rugs yet
He is in at night though. I nearly caved in today as it was cold earlier but hes a bit porky and not losing any weight and fine when I bring him in.
Weathers mad, its forcast nice and sunny for back end of next week

Tb, drops weight easily, feels the cold. I moved to the 300g today with a ballistic high density outer and a 100g neck, just in case she overheats (as she has grown a furry face and neck over the past 2 weeks as she's been wearing a standard no neck high density rainsheet).

Belle (sports horse) is in her 100g Weatherbeeta Landa Freestyle tonight as weather report said down to 6C and I don't want her to grow much of a coat (clipping her would be stressful). TB x Connie is actually oddly hardy, guess from the Connie aspect, and she is in a rain sheet. Scrawny 18yr old pony is also in rain sheet and shettie is naked of course. All are out 24/7 with access to excellent shelter.

The Weatherbeeta Landa is the best rug in the world if you ask me. I wish I had a 100g rug for all of mine!
