Do you reckon i could get away with a light turnout and a under rug underneath for winter?

Need ideas please i don't want to pay alot because the last rugs he ripped to shreads!
 
depends on the age, breed & condition of your horse, whether it is clipped, does he live out 24/7, how sheltered is your field ? I have a tbxnative, in at night, but fully clipped in a fairly exposed field. he's turned out with a 450g full neck on the worst of winter days.
 
He is 3, tb x welsh sec d, he hasn't been clipped and is stabled so only out in the day. The field it self isn't that sheltered though does have some trees around it. Im just trying to find cheapest way to buy him rugs incase he shreads the lot.
 
I think that will be fine, he has native in him and is only out during the day so he won't need tonnes of rugs on him. Could you possibly get a second hand one off ebay or perhaps a cheaper one from a horse market?

At my local market you can get decent rugs for half price or even less because they are un-named.

My young cob who had a chaser clip was fine in a LW t/o and when he had a full clip went up to a MW t/o and on the coldest days had a fleece on underneath.

He did wear a MW or H/W stable rug at night when full clipped and for a traditional, is not that thick haired due to being lightly rugged since 18 months.

If yours is unclipped, a LW t/o would probably be enough - just keep him dry and he should be warm enough not to need anything else.

I do give ad lib hay day and night so he could keep warm by munching.

I also find (several rugs later) that not all makes measure up the same, but always leave it till the last minute to buy these things and then have to use them before replacing them with ones that fit properly!!!
 
Sounds fine to me, having the Welshie in him should pretty much set him up for winter anyway! Unfortunatly my mare gets pretty fed up of rugs too and manages to 1/2 destroy rugs each and every year if i leave them on too long. From my experience, don't rug him over night, just in the day, he may just appreciate it a bit more!
 
cheap rugs are good! there is a company on ebay called protuff, best rugs i have ever bought

My pony is a horror when it comes to rugs, he will rip them and climb out of them and despite buying him several decent rugs he still ripped them, in the past 3 years he has only has 2 rugs (one was only bought for all in one neck cover not because of damage to his other one).
My TB has a Rhinegold rug and has managed to rip it clean in half on god knows what.

I agree to an extent that some cheap rugs (and anything else) can be false economy but not all of them are.
 
I find equestrian clearance really good for getting bargains, especially if you don't mind the colour. I got a high neck, MW weatherbeeta for less than £40 - especially if you buy at this time of year.
 
I found that the seller Windsor2000 on ebay has some great rugs and have bought several which have survived the Stinker. I did get him an Amigo MW last year which has survived well and was not too expensive - some on ebay under £40 at the moment.

Can personally recommend this one for not ripping and being water proof

Damm, now seen some stable rugs at good price and no way will Stinky 5'9 fit anymore - needs more like 6'3!
 
What does he rip them on? My Fell pony used to run hers against the fence so we put up a strip of electric fencing to stop her. We also bought a custom made 'rip stop' one for her once, she still managed to nick it but it didn't tear.
 
I would alway buy the best rug you can afford and yes , if you can only afford a lightweight one then make sure that the outer material is 1000 denier rip stop.. The horsewear and weatherbeeta rugs are good value, fit well and do several price ranges.
