Rugs!!!

Freshly blanket clipped very thin coated Selle F in a weather beta combo under rug and 250 g normal shaped stable rug, out 6am - 4pm in combo under rug and rhino full neck turnout. Snug as a bug.

23 yr old unclipped pony out in rambo rug 24 - 7 with shelter - also snuggly

ETA - between 0 and -2. ice hasn't thawed for days.

Cappy is in his Wheatherbeta heavy weight stable, with his fleece with a neck underneath. Fany is in her heavy weight stable, but only 'cos she is a little poorly at the mo.

Neither is turned out at present, Fany won't go out all winter due to illness. Cappy will go out in his Mark Todd extra heavy, if the weather warms up. We were -4 last night.

But it is dependent on their breed, Cappy is a KWPN so is a WB and is sensitive to cold. Fany is a Trait Ardennais, so is a cold blood and would not normally be rugged at all.

What type is your horse?

day time in a heavy weight half neck turn out
and night time either and under rug with a fleace on top or a under rug with a poly on top.

He's a Standardbred and a big girl!!!! Stabled in american barn with 7 others overnight and out in day between 9 and 4. It was -5 here last night and only getting to about 4 during the day! He was trace clipped but I broke my arm and couldn't ride him so his clip has almost grown out now.

My fully clipped boy has at night a weatherbeeta combo under-rug and a Masta Regnal hw. During the day he has underrug with mw stable. Same for mare but she has doesnt have a combo.
When they eventually get to go out probs a fleece with his Weatherbeeta combo Hw.

It really does depend on the individual horse, how much is clipped out and how cold a horse it is. My horse is quite warm naturally. He is clipped from head to toe and has on a 200gram under rug and a 200gram top rug with neck, hes very snuggly. I dont agree with people who pile rugs on, 2 rugs surfice, you can use different thickness's, no good for their backs with lots of extra weight from rugs.

Think i'm ok, He's got HW masta with neck and fleece on during day and then LW stable with MW turnout with neck(not waterproof hence using as stable rug) on at night in stable. He hasn't been cold when I see to him or too hot for that matter!!! Cheers guys!!xx

What have you got on your horse in the way of Rugs? I'm undecided if i'm right with my rugs this year!!

It's all down to the individual horse. One of mine is in a LW no fill Rambo, and the other is in a Rhino HW. Both are unclipped and out 24/7.

TB X with high chaser type clip - MW combo turnout (cotton sheet under if freezing like last couple of days). MW Half neck with cotton sheet under at night. If she's in during the day MW Half neck without cotton sheet. Seems to work fine, she's not cold but not boiling.

Welsh D with a bib clip, generally a warm pony but is a real wuss about getting his mane wet so has rugs with a neck, currently out during day in his duo outer (no liner) and light weight stable rug with summer sheet underneath when in at night. They're going to be out Christmas eve through to Boxing Day eve so I'm going to get the medium weight out of the loft for the nights

both fully clipped tbs have underrug and HW stable on top at night and the boy has underrug and heavyweight TO in the day and the girl has underrug and newmarket in the day.

when its been minus they have also had newmarkets in between the underrugs and stables

20 yr old Newforest X - has a mediumweight standard neck stable rug with a thick fleece underneath.

6 yr old - Connemara X - has a a heavy weight standard neck stable rug with a medium weight stable rug underneath.

my two big lads are in thermatex, 350gm stable rug and then a full neck 350g, whether in or out.
and their backs are fine.......

shetland is in a LW with full neck 300gm on top when out and a thermatex, blanket and 200gm stbale rug at night.

Tb- (unclipped) HW + fleece in day, HW stable and under-rug at night

cob- (fully clipped) HW + fleece in day, MW stable + under rug at night (+ fleece when it was REALLY cold the other night)

You cannot guage what is right or wrong for your horse by what anyone else uses on any of their horses.
How is your horse, too warm, too cold, losing weight, gaining weight?

Out 24/7:
Unclipped pony - naked
Fully clipped 5yr old connie - medium weight wug with medium weight combo on top
Fully clipped 20yr old - fal under rug, medium weight wug and premier equine 40g combo
Pony with an almost grown out full clip - fal medium weight with neck

In at night and out in the day:
Fully clipped connie - 2 snuggy hoods, under rug with neck and heavy weight turn out rug. I really don't want to have to re-clip this one as he kicked me just above my eye last time so rugging him as much as possible without him being too hot.

Very very cold here! Around -2 during the day and much colder at night - to go to - 10 tonight

None of mine are clipped, they are all out in the day and in at night. The 3 natives have a med weight turnout and a med weight stable rug. My elderly TB type has a heavyweight turnout with neck cover and a lightweight stable rug with a med weight one on top. My mini Shet (yes she has rugs

) has a lightweight foal turnout rug

She doesn't get hot in them, they are there for the cuteness factor as much as anything

Solo is in on box rest at the moment- he's wearing a Belmont Combo (370g) through the day and at night he's wearing 2 Belmonts. When he does go out he'll have his Duo on with a 400g liner.

Red wears his 370g Wug all the time.

They are both sporting grown out full clips at the mo.

My unclipped TBx is naked in the day and wearing a 200g at night. This is as rugged up as she gets, she never needs anything more.

TBH I'm really confused over rugs ATM - she never, ever feels cold even when turned out naked in the snow (rain is another matter, she hates it) so technically I think she could go without a rug at all.... but she has lost a teeny bit of weight so I've rugged her up so she burns less calories keeping herself warm. Does this sound right?

Veteran Welsh Mountain Pony, Unclipped, living out 24/7, HW TO Rug
30 year old retired TB X, Unclipped, out during day, in at night, HW Stable/TO Rug + Fleece under Stable Rug
14.2 Appaloosa pony, partly clipped, out during day, in at night, HW TO/Stable Rug + Fleece under Stable Rug
ISH - partly clipped, out during day, in at night, HW TO/Stable Rug

Trace-clipped 3/4 TB in Rambo Duo with 300g liner all the time (in at night, out by day) I put another lite-weight on but she was almost sweating.
