Ok, anyone can tell me the full rules of the work in arena, I know left to left etc... but how about lateral movement when in the opposite direction OR when on the diagnol???or get this, at the show the weekend a chap was riding "extended trot" in the opposite directions and expected the other rider to get out of the way because he was in extended?? Surely left to left should still apply???.ummmmmm I was riding round and I said left to left to someone and they said "I was trying to get out of your way!!" , I did not know whether she was going left or right hence I said left to left!! Opps... was I wrong??I was not rude just didnt want to end up in a heap!! But I would really like to know ALL the rules and will then ask the organiser to post it on the rails and then I feel I can say left to left or "my track" etc!!! without anyone getting annoyed!!!!

don't walk on the track

Now see....in the SJ'ing world, that rule makes absolutely NO SENSE whatsoever

You want the slow moving traffic on the outside track so that people turning to a fence don't have to cross the path

i agree but when you walk on the track you get screamed at!!! LOL To be honest i dont like to walk in sj warm ups anyway as normally far too crowded. depending on venue walk round rings or lorry park to start then cool off.

the above work for dressage though!

oh and also there is never pass too close, and don't walk two abreast unless humongous arena!

Yep, there are rules. The ugly bloke with potfuls of money and 6 horses he cant ride a leg of, gets priority at all times!

Ah well, at my yard, the rules are simple; if you're ambling about with no control over your horse, you're required to stay out of the way around the perimeter, unless you're on your own in the school which case you can fall off where ever you like.
As I'm the only person who actually HAS any control over their horse, I work round the numpties but yell at them if they cross in front of a jump.

Im going to print them off and put them on a tabbard
grin.gif
that way I can wear it when working in and shout at people that get in my way!
wink.gif

Working in is like a game of chicken, who's going to move first. I tend to stay on the inside track most of the time and keep out of peoples way. My horse hates others coming too close and no-one ever gives you enough room to get by on the inside track.

and the reality.....
Dressage - most expensive horse has right of way.
SJ - most bling on uncontrollable horse has right of way
Eventing - "after you" "no, after you" "I insist, after you"
tongue.gif

All rules go out the window at competitions- you just have to keep your eyes up and your wits about you!

At home left to left applies, if you're circling then you go inside anyone on the track, whatever rein. Lateral work and counter canter takes priority. Jumping takes priority.
Having said that, if the person isnt very knowledgeable I normally just tell them I'll work around them as this works really well

dont walk on the track, only on an inside track
left to left (obviously)
dont halt on the track
dont walk around in pairs gossiping
if in doubt shout left to left

With Archie (who bronks when anything comes near him in the warmup) i always shout left to left at people, its either that or they get mown down and Archie spooks their horse aswell..........

Some people never leave enough room tho, ive had a lot of near misses.

When doing lateral work i just make sure im looking up and that i dont just plough on aimlessly into people.

I think ALL competitions should have a poster/notice etc... outside the warm-up arena so that EVERYONE knows the rules and there is no excuse!! At a show this weekend, two horses ended up kicking out because the riders were just everywhere... luckily no one was hurt. Apparently SOME riders deliberately look down so that you think they are not looking and have to move out of their way!!! I think next time I will just stick my long schooling whip up their noses!! Not that I am violent in any way!!!

I mean come on, how simple are the rules???!!!!

That is a brilliant idea, will def stop me getting wound up at the people strolling two abreast on the outside track which is my particular pet hate

Even better would be posted rules and Steward who has complete Authorati! To yell at those misebehaving ones.

Schooling whips held out parralell to the ground can be wonderful things
grin.gif

And I have been know to ride down a "big name" who was not obaying the rules, wellI didn't know who he was and he was in the wrong

But that doesnt help if a woman doing BSJA doesnt know the differnec between a oxer and an upright. Muppet! And then she had the cheek to fall off as her horse bronced at mine..tsk..
Am going to stick signs next to jumps.
And if you dont understand red on the right or which way to jump an ascending oxer then god help you.

Ok, for those who cannot read how about it coming over a tannoy (excuse spelling!!) every 10 minutes!!! Left to Left, no walking on the track..blah blah... this will surely engrain on their brain and act like a brainwashing system!!!!

Oh sh*t - I'm p*ssing myself laughing in the office - no one else rides, so no one will get it!!!

That is the best!

Seriously - I actually put a red ribbon in my mare's tail in an effort to warm the numpties to stay away - not that they do - but a double barrell up thier *rses won't be my fault when the whizz up beside her too fast and close!

Merrist Wood is my absolute hate for unaff jumping - the amount of total idiots there is unreal... And most of them walk 3 abreast nattering and gossiping.

Am liking this idea, we the need the sound track voiced by a very strict german as that seems the only accent that gets through to the dressage queens
