I took in a rescue pony mare six weeks ago. During that time I have noticed she has a very rumbly tummy. I watch her constantly to see if she is on the verge of colicking but she seems fine. After she was here for two weeks I had booked my vet to come and scan her as she was too thin and too fat around the middle area. The morning he was to scan her she had a lovely colt foal out in the field. Not too big a surprise as I had my suspicions. Everyone is doing very well, including me!
She and the foal are out by day if the weather is good and in at night. I am feeding her 14% coarse mix twice a day and as much hay as she will eat. Grass in the paddocks during the day. She has a big appetite and now that she is no longer starving I thought the rumbling would stop. I have read some of the forum thoughts and most say not to worry. Thank you

Holy Moley! Another BOGOF! Did you have the vet out to check she had passed the placenta? Both she and the foal could have a massive worm burden but you need specialist advice on how to deal with that. You also might need to be feeding her a stud mix to make sure she's getting all the nutrients she needs to feed herself and her foal. Have you posted this in Breeding hun? You'll get a huge amount of advice and experience there. Good luck to you, mare and little Bogof x

Thank you for info. She had been wormed so that is fine. Foal and mother doing very well in spite of not great circumstances. I will check on website for feeding information. On top of everything re the foal, the mare has a twisted face in that her nose and muzzle area is all twisted to one side. Several possibilities, one from being in the womb wrong or she may have been kicked at a young age. No signs of broken skin etc for being recently kicked. She is between two and three years of age. Far too young to be a mother in my opinion but she is a terrific mother and loves her little foal. He is only three weeks old and is seems to be just fine.

Lots of ponies have rumbly tummies when they're digesting food, particularly if they've had a recent change of diet or circumstances. Don't worry!

Glad she and baby are doing well

My old mare rumbles away all the time whether she is on grass, hay, straw, oats, sugarbeet, it makes no difference, she's just a rumbler. She has had a number of foals in her time too.

Glad to hear mum and foal are doing well, love to see some piccies
