Thank you for your hugs and vibes this morning - I just wanted to share a few words to celebrate such an amazing little man who went this morning with dignity and love (and a tummy full of Polos!)
Riv was special to everyone who met him, as said by a non horsey friend - something about his eyes told you he was a good soul. I've had the most wonderful 6 years with him, he was my go anywhere do anything boy. When I went to see him I wanted to give up on riding having totally lost my confidence. Second time I sat on him I jumped 2"6 having not jumped for two years - it was pretty but I was smiling.
When he finally arrived home with me he didn't know the meaning of walk or stand on a hack or how to go forwards not backwards and rearing in the school, but I knew he was my forever friend. We worked on issues and soon could score a decent low 60% in a prelim dressage test but our main love was hacking (neither of us ever really got the jumping bug though we would go to the off cross country).
We have hacked for hours, in company and alone. But the best times where just the two of us - we'd go where the fancy took us and he always looked after me.
2 years ago River started to get poorly. He fought hard, and we did everything we could. I always said as long as you are happy little un I will do everything I can for you. Early spring this year we had a break through and I got to ride him again, only gently in walk, but it felt like heaven to be back on him again. Sadly as summer drew to a close he went down hill again, and on Saturday night he looked at me and said 'I'm tired Mum, tired of hurting and itching and fighting' so on Monday we called the vet.
Anyway sorry for the essay it helps to remember the good times about him... here are some pics so you can see what a beautiful lad he was.
Run free Riv Roo - your pain is over now & you were always loved...
