Runaway Dog....

We have an 11 month old bedlington terrier and she has always come outside with us when we ride/muck out the horses etc. but now she has a tendency to run towards any dog! We live right opposite a dog walk so she frequently sees dogs going past and she will just run for them! (or their owners - she loves people) its not to hurt the dog or owner - she just wants to play!! but now i always have to make sure that whenever im outside, there isn't a dog going past or i have to run after her and her recall isn't great because she just doesnt focus on you! And today, i knew she was outside, but the door was open so she could come in (we've done this for ages - never run away) until today - she must have seen another dog and gone onto the rode and someone phoned and said they had her.... so just got her back! i just done want to have to keep an eye on her 24/7 or leave her inside! help!

How scary for you! I can only recommend practising recall LOADS, especially with yummy treats like a bit of cheese or her favourite snack, and also make sure she has loads of exercise so she is pleased to be in the house whens there, and not just desperate to get out!

This is difficult. I still have this problem with my lab Bruno who is now two, but not as bad as it used to be. I ended up tying him up on a longish lead when we were somewhere he could run away from, so he was still out in the fresh air. Try to wear her out first with a fetch game.

My terrier used to escape from the garden and run like a possessed lunatic down the road always in the same direction (no idea why) luckily it was a quiet road but she would get out of the smallest gap and I would be sprinting after her flagging cars down etc.. It was a nightmare! Then bizarrely she just snapped out of it when she was about 18 months old. Doesn't help you but I wonder if it is a terrier thing???

oh no! it is quite possibly a terrier thing! typical! luckily our road is fairly quite too - there are a couple of dog walks beside us so no one drives fast if our dog does suddenly appear on the road! I hope our dog snaps out of it too - soon!!

I just want to know where mine thought she was going!! Now thinking back it was hysterical but at the time terrifying. All we need to do now is cure the Napoleon complex!! I'm sure yours will get over it soon my friends was the same and now they are all about 2 they seem to be better...
