Theres so few XC's in my area I was wondering if its possible to run an event without being a club / venue? Not sure if an individual can get event insurance cover for the day (and how much itd be?). Also wondered about running old fashioned gymkhanas for kids at a local venue but again unsure what costs would be involved (obviously venue hire cost). I think I could attract decent numbers just by offering sponsors prizes and nice old fashioned trophies (which nowhere seems to do anymore!).

The big stumbling block is going to be insurance I'm afraid. My job involved always thinking about worst case scenario and although my family say I am a terrible pessimist you must take a step back and think carefully about the worst thing that could happen, like someone falling off and getting hurt, a pony b eing injured, causing an accident, etc. - need I go on.

It is always going to be easier to run these events either in the name of a club with its own insurance, or at a venue that is insured. You can give every disclaimer you like, but you must still do a proper Risk Assessment and have medical and preferably veterinary cover. There are companies that will do random insurance, the BHS could probably give you the name.

The best way to go about it might be to join forces with a local club or venue and volunteer to organise something for them.

Contact your local BHS committee or Riding Club, they may love to hear from someone with the will to run an event!
