Does anyone know what is involved in obtaining a licence from the local councilfor a pony trekking centre ie. as to what conditions will need to be satisfied.

Horses & tack have to be in good condition. Fences must be in good order. Areas where members of the public may be have to be safe........so no rutted lanes or potholes in the yard!!. Signage needs to be in place........I read in Horse & Hound that one place had to put 46 no smoking signs in place to comply with new smoking regulations.
Fire extinguishers etc must be in place, & some councils will require you to have an inspection from the fire service.
There's loads more but they're the basics....round here the inspection is made by the vet, accompanied by a council official who will look at the health & safety aspect. They will also want to see a copy of your insurance policy.

i used to work at a trekking centre and we have to have our horses vetted twice each year-once for BHS approval, and once for the Weksh Tourist Board, also theres insurance to consider (public liability, third party, fire and theft) you need to comply with health and safety regulations for staff and clients and will probably have to be inspected for that as well...

It really depends on the council involved - some are very thorough but some are less so..
The horses are usually vetted, and they do check ages of anything that looks young (has to be over 4yo to work) as well as soundness.
They check tack, and all health and safety aspects - fire, smoking, first aid provision, COSHH, RIDDOR etc.
But having said all this, I know of one large yard with horses that were too young/too old and unsound and they just shipped them off the yard for the day in a lorry, and borrowed some more suitable horsies....not that I advise this!
