Running costs - 4x4 & trailer vs lorry (also in CR)

starting to wonder whether a lorry would make more sense for me but have no idea what the average running costs would be like compared to my current 4x4 & trailer.

I currently have a Jeep Cherokee & Ifor Williams 510 which I love, I use the jeep as my normal car during the week which is fine as I don't do much mileage in the week. However I'm out competing more and the fuel bills are starting to mount up plus additional mileage means extra servicing & maintenance costs. (last service cost £285, tax is £220pa and last weekend's 100 mile round trip with trailer cost me £30 in diesel

)

Would appreciate some info from you guys about what sort of MPG I could expect from a lorry, road tax, etc for comparison

Hi I cant advise costs for you but is jeep petrol or diesel.

Dont forget if you buy a lorry you will have two lots of Tax,Insurance,Mot and servicing.

This is said from the perspective of a Diesel 4 x 4 owner who doesnt currently compete tons

lorry tax is £165 mpg older 7.5 ton high teens, newer ones post 2001 low twentys the tiny 3.5 ton boxes do 30ish if you go steady.. i would say if you do a lot of miles each week without the trailer then its worth getting a lorry and a very economical car perhaps otherwise your present arangement would seem best if you can manage with a trailer...

Hi, I traded down to a small Vauxhall Agila car last year, which is £35 a year on road tax, and does about 48mpg mostly, town driving.Insurance for myself and hubby is about £200 a year. It was new so won;t need MOT yet,local garage service it with Vauxhall parts so that the warrantee isn't invalid, at £65 against the dealer wanting £200 for a service!!
I did that in order to buy a 3.5t box as I figured it would be cheaper long term to run about in a small car and use a box for shows.The box costs £180 in road tax, and £300 for fully comp insurance with breakdown cover.It is incredibly ecconomical, about 40mpg.(2005 citroen Relay),I have no idea yet what the general maintenece will be, but as it is a newer chassis with a brand new body, I am hoping it won't cost loads!Had it checked over after I brought it home, and the only thing that needed doing was the brake pads- cost £90.
Personally, I think the savings from running a big 4x4 pay for the box pretty quickly, especially if the road tax continues to rise on high emission cars.

MOT £50 but dont need one for ages.
