I would like some idea of running costs for a 7.5 ton two horse lorry..I am sure a few of you on here run one...
Can you just give an estimation on MPG and MOT/Plating cost and service costs.
I understand brake replacements could cost £1000 +...and tyres are over £150 each...
Thanks in advance..going to see one this pm Iveco ford with tilt cab.

Get a mechanic to do an inspection on the lorry if the body/ horse box suits your needs. We usually estimate about £1k for plating/service per annum however like a car you can never tell. Good luck.

Get the mechanic who checks it (MUST!) to advise on availability of spares as well. My piece of ancient (Merc) history will do 17 mpg on a good day. I budget 1k/yr for service, test etc and have stayed under budget so far (touches wood!)

Thanks, both of you...I am taking a mechanic with me this afternoon , and if I like it and all looks good it has to go to a weigh bridge so I an sure it's 1500 kg payload as Seles states..
Thought budget would be about £25 a week to run it & fuel.

Waaaay more than £25 a week, allowing for things to need repairing. I have had a run of bad luck, and over the past year, mine has needed tyres, new gear box, clutch, steering rods replaced and a few other things. Cost in excess of £4000. Without the cost of plating.
Mine costs £260 to insure.
Think tax was £250.
It does about 15 mpg. Is a K 1992 Iveco.
Fingers crossed, mine won't need anything else repairing or replacing for a few years!

Tax should be £165, insurance around £200 unless you are very young.

And they CAN go right! In which case cheap as chips.

If they wrong, big bills....get yr mechanic to be really thorough -also does he understand lorries or is he a car guy?

I never got any change from £1K for plating and servicing, diesel costs are also quite high as ours drank diesel, I'm sure I worked it out at about 40p per mile but that was over five years ago. Ours was quite a nice lorry but I still had bills, eg the clutch went and that was pretty pricey, also you need good recovery insurance. I think your estimate is way too low!
