our german shep has been under the weather for months, first vet said nothing was wrong but she didnt get better.
then after a while of nagging mum to take her back to vets, they found she had pneumonia and as been one hunders of pounds of drugs for months and months and she still havent recovered.

she has an airy cough as if she is trying to bring something up, and today after eating snow she was actually sick, but only goey liqud stuff.

she has lost a ton of weight but vet said she was putting back on, although i dont think i agree. she eats normally but i dont think drinks as much as she did.

please anyone with and advice or expereince with this lease help us.

thanks

What age is she?

She may have some sort of lung problems and even lungworm if she is coughing like that - did you check what was in the goo? Larvae etc?
Lungworm can be picked up in the slimey trails left by slugs and snails which is why it is really important to lift food bowls when dogs have finished eating.

She may also pancreas problems if she is losing weight/not absorbing food. Common in GSDs.
However I would need to see a pic, a lot of people mistake normal weight GSDs for being skinny, they have a natural tuck-up around the brisket area and you should be able to see the ribs of a tight-coated dog when they are breathing heavily.

Would a change of vets be in order?

she is 6, apart from being a bit brown, the goo was clear.

i dont know if my mum will change her vet they have been so good to her for years, other vets have treated her like some agressive dog and want a muzzel on he, and shes such a softy it really worrys her.

in this pic i dont think she looks so bad, but look at the way she stands, shes usually head high and ears up.

i think this shows she is skinny, her hips never used to stick out so much

and look at the point on her head where the bone comes up.

Nice girl.
She does look depressed. Not worryingly thin and while a GSD's thick coat can hide a multitude of sins, her coat is in good condition.

Here is a site about lungworm, maybe mention it to the vet?

Has she had blood tests? What are her bowels/bladder functions like?
I'm afraid if you are not happy you will either have to get your mum to hammer on their door or change, that is what we had to do.

Best of luck and keep us posted x

shes had blood tests which were normal, x-rays which showed the fluid on the lungs and the fluid examined and all they said was that it was a form of pneumonia

i dont think her toilet habits are 100% in the 1st few months of this she wasnt pooing very often but since on medication she goes more reguarly.

she is a lovely dog it really worrying shes not herself but we keep getting they cant find anything wrong.

thanks for your help

No worries, I know how hateful it is when there are no answers, hope you get yours. Do have a read at that site. I had never heard of it until I saw that poster at the vets.

To be honest my experience is that most local vets do not have the expertise to deal with anything serious or anything out of the ordinary. Can you persuade you mum to ask for a referral to a specialist vet? That way she won't feel she is changing her vets, rather seeing someone they recommend who is a specialist.

that is a good idea, thanks

shes taking a turn for the worse tonight

mums on the phone to the vets now,
she just wants to lay in the snow, shes been sick and is trying to be sick still.

her breathing is terrible. shes looking very sorry for herself

I remember you posting about this back in October.

Poor pup - I hope there's some resolution soon - and agree that getting a referral to a specialist is a really good idea, if not now pretty urgent.

Sending loads of vibes to Ellie. I would agree with the suggestions of asking for a referral, most vets are happy to refer to a specialist if they are not sure what is causing the problem.
