Asking for help or ideas here for my whippet who has started frequently toileting in the house!! There have been quite a few changes in the last 6 months so I'll give a rundown.
Just over six months ago everything was fine. I work and have a dog walker. An average day would be breakfast and pee/poo in the morning, I leave the house at 7.30 and dog walker arrives between 12 and 12.30. She is then out for 3-4 ours and returned home at around 3.30-4ish. I then get home at 6.15. This basic routine has remained the same for about 18 months now.
The routine went on for about a year or so with no problems at all and no accidents, happy dog and owner. However, in the last six months I broke up with my boyfriend who lived with us and he moved out. My new boyfriend moved in at the beginning of November last year and Freya absolutely worships the ground he walks upon.
Since this change there is a pee (and sometimes a poo) on the kitchen floor nearly every morning (last pee before bed is usually between midnight and 1am), often there is an accident by the time my dog walker gets there and there is frequently another one once I get home (so that's only 2 hours she's at home alone in the afternoon). On Friday my poor walker also had to clean up diarrhea!! Yet once we are home in the evening or weekends she is completely fine and poo is totally normal.
I have already bought a new crate (the old one went with the ex) and also put a heat mat in there as thought the cold might be waking her up at night and then she'd need to pee. I've moved her back onto raw food rather than kibble and myself and boyfriend are ensuring we don't make a fuss when we arrive or leave (although this breaks my heart slightly - silly human!).
I'm starting to run out of ideas. In an ideal world obviously I would like to go right back to step one and leave her for only 10 mins and build it up etc but with us both working full time (and boyfriend travels 1 or 2 weeks every month) this isn't really feasible. We are also currently looking for a house to buy which would mean we would be home more as it would be closer to work (currently we travel 1.5 hours each way!) and in the new house there would be a dog door installed. But I'd rather get this problem sorted now.
I hope this all made sense - ideas and tricks very welcome.
