My new mare has, since she arrived 5 weeks ago, had a terrible reaction to the flies up at our yard. Even the vet remarked on their voracity.

I am now getting totally fed up as she is every day coming up with another horrible bite and her neck at the moment is swollen all the way down in huge bumps and when you wash it with hibiscrub it's like little brown shitty scabs that come off. What to do???

I am using Skin So Soft and fly repellant to try and keep the flies off and have actually smeared her whole neck in Sudocreme tonight to try and help. On her udder she has an extremely bad bite which no matter what I put on it, the flies are getting through to it.

Help!!!!!!!!!!

i'd keep her in until the bites have healed so that there are no open wounds as such then get some benzyl benzoate from the chemist, water it down and spray it on all over. Be careful not to put it on the head because of the eyes and things but apart from that i found it great, i'd invest in a good fly rug too! ;-)

In the long run fly rugs work out cheaper.Have a look on equestrian clearance they had masta rugs for £30 earlier in season with full neck.Hope she soon feels better.

I can send you my fly spray recipe .My horse is very fine coated tb and he was bitten to bits last year on all the best products but hes been much happier with my spray.I use rug some days but he pulls it over hs head and its now torn from his teeth little b****r

ShaznTaz - if your budget will run to it I would absolutely recommend Rambo Flybuster fly rug. Not only are they a fabulous fit and well thought out design so they cover all the necessary bits really well, but the mesh fabric is impregnated with permethrin, a natural and effective fly repellant. I bought Sunny one and it's beyond fabulous. Comes with a detachable neck cover. Cheap it isn't though - I think it cost me £110 but the permethrin stays in for 25 washes (ought to last me 25 years then!) and it's light and comfortable even in hot weather. I know this sounds like I'm on commission from Rambo but honestly, it's the best thing since sliced bread!

try kill itch that really keeps the flies away my gran uses it on her stallions which have both got sweet itch, it does stink but really does work she just rubs a handful into their mane and tails and puts a fly sheet on them i know your mare hasnt got sweet itch but if it stops the flies getting to her then its wort a try

wash your horse in tea tree shampoo to soothe her and kill any infection she may have on the bites leave in in the day and turn out at night try some fly sray called net tex it is cheap and it has deet in it witch they use in the army to keep flys away from the wounded so they dont get gang green so it must be good i use it and its the best i have found so far!

You must live near me or our horses are related. My new mare is really sensitive to flies and the area swells up around it. I have done the same as you clean it and sudicream, great stuff. But she is left with lots of wee scabs which trying to get rid off. She was that bad she must have been bitten on her front legs and reacted badly that the skin came off she now has a lovely white mark on her lovely bay legs.

I use Fly Free from global herbs. Found with my monster (16.3) swells up HUGE that if you gave 2 scoops instead of the minimum of one it works really well haven't seen a single fly bite on him. Its well worth the money
