We did a bit in summer and loved it - tonight i decided to run the last part of our walk down a country track - my dog has to stay on her lead (so has an extendable) and is fine with that.

Im not intending to do cani-x btw, just mabey our own version??

Id like to get a belt so i can have my hands free when running, and her in a harness so its nor pulling on her neck - but issue is she has mild hip displasia... if she runs manically (i mean off lead running through fields etc which we have stopped her doing now.) she does go mildly lamer...however running on grass/lanes like tonight she was absolutely fine and LOVED it (havent seen her that excited about running in weeks! :) )

So given her HD - will a harness affect her?... and will running affect her? Im literally talking a minute, rest, minute, rest 2 - build up etc.... VERY slowly for both of our sakes :D

She can walk 2/3 miles on lead no issues and is 90% sound (just the hd)

Shes on metacam and nothing else and is NOT in any pain....

Thoughts please?

Personally I would worry about any higher impact activity with a dog with HD but thats just me and I would definately speak to my vet first.

With Teal when I run with him we have to do a bit of road work between paths etc I have a harness with a longish lead (I got a hi viz one from the pound shop) tucked into my leggings I run in. He doesnt pull at all and I barely notice hes there, in theory I could leave him loose and he would prob be ok but I am not brave enough just incase I all I have to do is grab the lead. I did have a belt I used but I looked like a pillock so didnt go out like it again plus I get quite hot because im a fatty just getting back into running and the belt annoyed me. lol.

Thanks :)

im wary about how much running etc she does - but like i said - straight lines/good surfaces shes as sound as a pound (or as sound as she will be!)

running manic off lead/in out fields etc like she used to do she went a little lamer....

I dont want to overdo her - i can just do a half mile and finish... but she adores running especially with me... just not offlead as i know thats just asking for her to run off and go mental :/ :)

I may well be wrong, but didn't one of your posts say she was quite young? 9 months or so?

No large breed dog, HD or not, should really be taken jogging under the age of 18 months. If your dog does have HD even more so.

Maybe wait until she's older? Apologies if your dog is older :)

shes 5 :)

its mild and id built her up gradually - tbh she runs like a div anyhow on her lead (Extendable) im just thinking it may even be a good thing if its channeled running rather than like a pleb even on her lead???

If im wrong i dont mind being told!.... last thing i want to do is hurt my dog! shes x agility so used to running etc but obvs when i was told about her problems i immediately stopped agility and she wasnt lame on front (wrists) anymore!

ah right sorry! :) thinking of someone elses recent thread about a young dog being diagnosed with HD. :)

You can get good quality handmade belts and short harnesses here :
http://www.sassdogequipment.co.uk/
(you would best getting walking belt and a tracking harness).

Also a good selection here:

I have some ManMat stuff but I buy it direct from them. Not worth doing that for a couple of items though as it's overseas postage.

As for the HD, I really couldn't comment as it's not something I have experience of. I would have thought it would be best to speak to your vet about that part. From my experience running dogs we always restrict speed in training as less likely to have injuries. Even when racing we use the brakes to give the dogs something to lean into when running downhill - they much prefer this. I would personally make my decision based on observation of the dog. You say she goes lame after running about off lead but not when you cause resistance by doing cani-x sort of runs. Also that she loves it. That would make the decision for me. All ours are different and you learn the most by just watching them :-)

^ thanks :)

i will speak to my vet but i think with anything with my dog its trial and error. I know runnig like a loonatic makes her go slightly lame. as does agility - therefore agility shes been retired from and runing like a manic has been put on an extendable :)

Like i said -it may be trial and error - when she does go lame - its not even noticable to most people....just us!! :)

Welcome :-)

I'm sure you'll both have great fun. I highly recommend the belts. Once you use it once you'll wonder how you ever managed without!

PS If you are after a bungee lead PM me as I have some brand new ones that I need to advertise one of these days.

how much are your bungee leads and how long? (n red..? :D)

bought a belt off ebay :D dont know if its any good but i figured if i cant run with her then i havent wasted too much money....

I already have a lovely padded harness which she adores :)

It's these ones I have in colour A (red with black), never used.
http://www.manmat.eu/en/products/displayProduct/Dog+leashes,+collars/19)+Flat+Leash+With+Bungee/50

£8 (which includes p&p). They are £16.99 on snowpaw http://www.snowpawstore.com/dog-walking/dog-collar-and-dog-lead/manmat-bungee-flat-lead.html or £9 plus pricey postage from manmat directly. They are 1" webbing but this style it's doubled over so the lead itself is thinner but double thickness.

If you want one PM me and I'll send you my email address for paypal if that suits. No probs if not.

I'm sure your belt will be fine :-)

thanks ^ ive got a red lead which is very spring atm - will make sure we get into it first then i will come back to you for a proper lead :D

thanks :D
