Gov is on box rest for the forseeable due to a fractured splint bone and bone chip. He is coping remarkably well and doesn't seem at all stressed by what is clearly an undesirable situation.

He has been in for two weeks now but over the last 5 days he has had a rather runny bottom. The droppings in his stable appear to be completely normal but he is passing small amounts of very liquid poo - usually while I am grooming him.

It makes quite a mess of his back legs and whilst I have kept him clean with a bucket and sponge, I can't walk him to the wash bay for obvious reasons.

I put him on Global Herbs 'Box Rest' about a week ago so that is the obvious culprit, but rather than dump a perfectly good supplement can anyone recommend something to help?

I have used Pink Powder before to good success but as his droppings are normal i'm reluctant to fork out another £15. Would natural yoghurt be worth a try?

He is on soaked hay (of which, to my knowledge, they are using the same lot of bales) and a handful of chaff and fibre cubes as a carrier for his supplements and to stop him kicking at feed time.

See my first thoughts when I opened this post and started to read was 'PINK POWDER' and after dinishing the post.. i still say.. Pink powder.

Just a probiotic supplement.
is he on any bute? danilon in particular has a known side effect of going straight thru them

maybe it is the new supplement you have but him on? try a five day course of proteixn it comes in a paste and tube like a wormer and it is very concertated so thats only why you need a five day course!

Technically a fractured splint bone - a splint is an inflammation.

Fairly obvious troll (check previous posts)...just ignore them.

Think I will get something i've used before then to be on the safe side. Thanks for the suggestions.

Feed a scoop or two of dry bran?
My horse is the same with any change in feed or routine

Medication also has the same effect.
Brewers Yeast is cheaper and works just as well as protexin on my TB x.

WHY ON THIS EARTH WOULD YOU SUGGEST HAVING HIM PTS? thats insanity!
Its only a split.. its hardly the end of the world!

It's not the split I'm concerned about

- it's the loose poo. I mean, does this not mean the animal is suffering?

Absolutely!

Exactly.

But tbh it is a fractured splint bone. The splint bone is considered part of the structure of the leg. So technically a broken leg. Amazing how things can be twisted eh?

Add that to the runny bottom...and the distress of the box rest...

PTS is the only option!

But it does surely show the power of the media in distorting the way we think about things!

Governor, please dont have your horse PTS! Just see the irony! No-one has even mentioned worms!

TBH it is most likely to be either stress of boxrest/change in routine or feeding or a combination of both. I would stop the GH and see if it clears up as that seems the most obvious cause.

You could also try dry hay if he is able to have dry hay.

He may need worming.

But it could be an infection so you do need to keep an eye on it. If you have checked the obvious and it doesnt settle down then speak to your vet.

Better still, ask your vet for the advice rather than us!

Hope it settles down.

Whatever you do, dont get the RSPCA out!

Recent worm count (very good) so it isn't worms. And as I stated in the original post I am putting it down to the GH supplement and i'm sure he will settle on it. I've had him for 5 years, I know how he reacts to different situations both physiologically and behaviourally.

I'm asking users, rather than my vet, how well their horses have responded to alternatives, such as yoghurt, as clearly the vet will gladly sell me the most expensive probiotic. Very often cheap 'horseman's' tricks work just as well, if not better, and as it is a 'quick fix' for a temporary problem it is preferable.

This is a very mild case of the runs, as I said, again in my OP, his droppings are normal - i'm not worried!

Governor, I'm sorry if I stressed you in any way by suggesting that you have your horse PTS. I'm sure you love him dearly and only doing your best by him. I really do not think he should be PTS because he has loose poo.

If you see Dozzie's post above I'm sure you'll get why I said what I did.

My vet sold me a tub of Protexin Bio Premium for my mare who's had smelly cow pats (but not in any greater frequency or making a mess of her bum/legs) since she was at Leahurst at the end of April.

I cannot get her to eat it. I have tried all manner of feeds, with added treats blah blah. She just won't have any of it. whatever I try to disguise it with, even I can still smell the yeast like odour in the feed.

I bet it was so expensive too!

I don't. Dozzie's post was sarcastic.....I think. Yours came across as you meant it.

I was not being sarcastic to Nailed and if it came over that way I am sorry. I dont think I was being sarcastic really either!

Just trying to show how things can be twisted and how opinions can be affected.

As far as I am concerned the advice given on this thread is pretty sound and based on common sense. (apart from Patty's LOL!)

The advice was totally genuine with no sarcasm intended.

Apart from the last line!
wink.gif
That was sarcasm.

I thought your advice to have the horse PTS was made in sarcasm towards Patty's response.

Or did you just highlight everything in quote text in error and it wasn't you who said that PTS is the only option?

I'm confuzzled. It doesn't take much.

Have no idea what happened with the quotes. I have been back in to check and cant see where it is going wrong! Sorry!

I will see what I can do!

ETA It wont let me change it. Sorry. It is bugging me too!
