runny eye

My mare had a very runny eye yesterday, which seemed to ease off at the end of the day. I washed it with clear, pre-boilt water and cotton wool only used once.

Eye was still a bit watery today but nowhere near as bad as yesterday so repeated treatment. I have seen some old posts here now and getting a bit worried. At what point should I be worried and call the vet?

If the runny bit startes to look "gunky" or discoloured i would call a vet. If its just watery and there is no swelling or soreness i would wait and see whether it clears up. if it continues to be watery after a while it might be that she has a blocked tear duct and it just needs clearing.
Any swelling, cloudyness of the eye etc.. and/or wateryness becomes thick and discoloured id call a vet.

thanks, Discharge is watery but there was a lot of it yesterday. Less at the end of the day and less again today. It is possible that she just had got something in the eye and it is making its way out. If I am not happy with it after a few days I will call vet though.

Ive had two horses with blocked tear ducts. It may just be either she has something in it or it is the start of a blockage. Quite a simple process to unblock though if it is that. Hope she feels better soon!
