My new pony had runny eyes in his last home and has them here too, I clean up his eyes daily and often there are marks a couple of inches below his eyes from the gunge which crusts over

the vet has had a look and says there is nothing wrong so I am not concerned that its anything major but I am a bit worried he will be like this always, it doesn't seem very normal to me

Is it an age thing? (he is a yearling) an allergy or just one of those things maybe?

My tb sometimes gets runny eyes if the flies are bad and she's not wearing a mask. Made the mistake of leaving it off one day in the summer and she had one really puffy, runny eye. I bathed it in cold tea, turned out next day with mask and that was it sorted!
Probably not flies if youngster had a runny eye today - hopefully they've all drowned!!

Could it be due to the windy weather? Any plant seeds blowing about etc (sorry, not very good with the likes of horticulture and things so haven't a clue what's what at this time of year!!)

Hmm thats a strange one. Is the grass very long/has heads or weeds that could be rubbing his eyes?

I do have long grass but its the same if he is on the short grazing and the last place didn't have very long grass

My little mare tends to get runny eyes when the flies are bugging her so I use a mask when they are out in force. Her eyes improve a lot when she wears a mask but she sometimes gets it in strong wind too. They don't seem to bother her apart from the flies so I just stick to the mask :) x

There's definitely something going around. My boy came in with slightly 'droopy' looking eyes which were weeping on Friday. I bathed them and waited to see if it would settle down on its own but today one eye was a bit swollen, looked a bit sore and had some yellow gunk coming out of it so got the Vet out and we have some eye drops for Conjunctivitis. Maybe you should ask your Vet about whether it could be this?

My observations are that certainly this year, I have seen a lot of runny eyes... to the point where it could be mistaken for the norm, every yard I have spoken with has had a problem with it. The vets say it is due to the weather and the prevalence of flies... Indeed the last 24hrs were the coldest for a long while and no flies, also no runny eyes at the yard. perhaps wait it our for a while and see if this new weather has an effect. if not, look into bedding and consult a vet. If the eye is red and inflamed dont wait, consult a vet.
