My horse has a runny nose but only one side, he is on his 2nd lot of antibiotics he had one course of 5 days starting wed 4th sept which cleared up a lot but there was still a little something there, so rang vets and they prescribed another 5 day course.he is very well in himself eating drinking going toilet alert etc. He is 25. Has anyone experienced this before and have u ever tried homeopathy?

In my experience that is usually a sign of a mild allergy, often due to dust if it runs almost clear and slightly white rather than yellow with no other symptoms, antibiotics may reduce the reaction and inflammation but will not cure it only removing the cause or removing the horse from the cause will do that, soak hay or give haylage, dust free bedding, if the horse is out 24/7 it may be a reaction to pollen that should go away soon.

Thank u, he has had some diff haylage been on it possibly about 5/6 weeks now, to start off with the discharge did smell, would it do that if an allergy?

No, a mild allergy runny nose would not smell.

I would go back to the vet for a scope.

I agree a scope would be the best way to know what is going on and allow the vet to prescribe the correct meds rather than giving a general anti biotic that may only suppress the symptoms but not actually treat the root cause.

A runny smelly nostril on one side would usually indicate a tooth problem which is what my horse had. Eventually had to have the tooth removed. An X-ray would reveal the problem and is probably cheaper than a scope. The fact that the antibiotics do not appear to be doing much would also indicate tooth trouble because the sinus is infected.

Yes definitely get it checked again, one of our oldies had a tooth out she already had a discharge, which developed into a sinus infection, huge abscess etc

She was 24, the tooth came out very easily the abcess on her face was huge, I didn't want to take her to stay at the vets so we flushed it daily ourselves.

Oh ok thank u, lightning doesn’t have any swelling, but been told that if the root of the tooth has an absess it won’t necessarily be causing any discomfort as such 😮

My horse had his tooth out at the Vet's surgery under standing anaesthetic. He stayed at the vet's for about 2 days and recovered quite well except that the sinus infection came back. He was treated with antibiotics but it just wouldn't clear up so they took some swabs to identify the specific bugs and then prescribed another antibiotic. It still didn't clear up so they were talking about removing a small piece of bone under his eye to get into the sinus so that they could flush it out. I decided not to have this done and turned him out 24/7 on grass. The fact that he had his head down eating day in day out enabled the sinus to drain naturally and it cleared up on its own - thank goodness! My horse did not have an abscess. He was about 18 years old.

My friend's pony had a runny nostril on one side for quite a while which was from an infected sinus. Unfortunately she got worse and was PTS
