My boy is 12 now and has always been a bit of a worrier. When he is ridden he poos like mad sometime quite runny but in the stable overnight his droppings are a good consistency. I have also noticed that his first droppings in a morning after his feed are a bit cow pat like! I guess this might have something to do with stress as he chews and gur ns when I first arrive in a morning before he gets his feed. Back, teeth and tack have all been checked, but as we've had him since 5 yr old I guess it's just how he is.
He has been scoped for ulcers last year discovering some small ones which he had gastro guard for. Has anyone else addressed this kind of thing? I was thinking of trying naf haulage balancer or something similar?
Thanks in advance x

Has he enough haylege/hay to last him till the morning?. Maybe if he's been without food for a couple of hours, his stomach is feeling a bit 'acidic' when you go to ride him.

Maybe worth upping the haylege or offering him a net to pick at for half an hour before you ride?

ETA: sorry you say that you feed him a bucket feed.

Thanks for the reply. He has usually eaten all of his hay by morning so I could look at upping it. I never ride him on an empty stomach because of the ulcer issue from before, but still his droppings are too loose. It is defiantly a stress thing, he was on box rest today and his poos were terrible! Think I might look into something to help him chill out. Magnesium?

I own a bit of a worrier too :)

Yes, upping the haylage is a good plan, though hay may be better as it's a little kinder on the stomach for an ulcer prone horse, but is depends on your yard's rules.

Ive got my worrier of a mare on Coligone. It helps buffer acids in the stomach and acts as a soother. However, it's a tad pricey, so Haylege Balancer may be worth a try.
My mare gets 2 dessert spoons a day of Brewers yeast. It really helps firm up her loose droppings.

You may find that a simple management change, such as upping the forage is all that is needed in your horse's case. So I would try that before spending extra on the supps. :).

I hadn't noticed this thread and just posted something similar.

My horse poos a lot when ridden but its not runny. I'm putting it down to stress at the moment as he is only a baby.

Brewers Yeast is very good and inexpensive.

Have a look at Dengie Healthy Tummy. There have been some good reports about this working well on worried tummies and helps calm horses down as well. It is a complete feed, so you don't need to give anything else.

Read the blurb on Dengie's website!

Thanks for all your replies! I have given him a net of hay and a net of haulage overnight so will see what the effects are before trying a supplement, but brewers yeast sounds a good starting place.
