I have a 11 week old puppy and his poo is loose not watery just not normal, he has been wormed every 2weeks with drontal and he was fed on beta puppy food which i changed to a more cerial based food over the last 4 days and its no better i called our vets and they said leave on this food for a week and if no better try another make but if it turns watery take him in, has anyone tried the Pro-Kolin paste??? this was also reccomended by a friend who suggested feeding him chicken and boiled rice, any ideas welcome at a bit of a loss just tempted to take him to the vets but after speaking to them on the phone im sure they think im crazy

There are a lot of people on here who are better qualified to anwer this than me - but here are my thoughts!

If a dog is on hard food -ie dry complete food, their stools should be harder and more, well solid than a dog on a meat based diet - ie chappie.

The chicken and rice idea is always good, nice bland and basic for his tummy - could he be allergic to something in the food maybe???

Just a few thoughts! xxx

It might be nothing more sinister than over feeding!
Try cutting back on the amount fed and see if that works, how long have you had the pup? Going to a new home is stressful on their systems especially the change in water, I always send pups to their new homes with a bottle of my tap water so the new water can be integrated, especially as some many areas add multiple chemicals to "improve" the water quality!
if pup is unwell , then visit the vet.
Tree Bark Powder is a brilliant thing to keep in your vet cupboard, helps dry up the runs, and a great convalescence food too!
Good old 'Kaolin and Morph' from the chemist is another runny tum remedy I would never be without ( and a lot cheaper than Pro-Kolin from the vet!!)

Thing I would worry about feeding rice and chicken the pup might come to depend on getting nice people food and as a result won't eat dog food (I know a number of dogs that are like this. One of them refuses to eat anything bar chicken from M&S!)

And as NELL says, if you've only just got the pup the whole move may have been a bit stressful hence a wee unsettled tum. Hope puppy is feeling better soon

Just got back from the vets with this exact same problem. She has given me some kaolin paste and some tins of ID dog food, which apparently is the blandest food you can get. I have to give her this for three days and then slowly re-introdcuce the dried food. She said that being young pups they have a very delicate pre-biotic balance and it can easily be upset and is harder for them to get it back into balance. She thinks this will 'kick start' it all again and she should be producing normal poos within a few days!

My breeder advised me to put a spoonful of natural bio-yoghurt in my pups feeds to keep her system in order. I did this and didn't have any problems, until I forgot to get a new pot and after a few days, she had the runs, so was immediately put back on it and she is fine again. Worth a try.

Bio yoghurt is very good for restoring their guts to normal.

and cheaper than the probiotic stuff the vets sell you

Also - we keep some baby kaolin at home (rather than the adult version) - just from the chemist.

If my dog has this problem i feed him boiled chicken and mashed potato or rice. Then a bit of bio yoghurt. But yours doesn't sound that bad? Maybe just add some yoghurt?

Arrowroot powder worked on our kitten as well - but she develped a bit of a chronic problem and it was they only way to break the cycle.

thanks for all the replies, everyone i have spoken to including the vet thinks i am overeacting about this but i wouldnt put up with the runs for more than a few days before i did something about itand he has had them nearly 2 weeks, i know it is not bad but want to prevent it getting worse, he is very happy in himself and seems healthy we have had him 4 weeks now and he settled to life with us really well we also have a 4 year old dog who apart from insisting on weeing on him
