Hi

My 19 year old ID has had a runny nose for the past couple of weeks on and off. I first noticed a small pool of snot (sorry!) outside the gate of his stable where he stands with his head over - it had obviously run out whilst he was standing there at some point. This morning I went to tack him up and quite a bit of runny, light green, non-smelly snot ran out of this same nostril again - it is only in one nostril.

We had the dentist this week for his regular rasping/check etc but I didn't think to mention this to him. Dentist is particulary thorough and gave him a full facial/cheek check etc so am confident isn't due to teeth.

Noticed that his hay was quite dusty too and so have started hosing it thoroughly before feeding. Could it be a form of allergy? If so, does anyone have any ideas as to what I can give him to try before getting vets involved?

i've seen something similar in a horse with sinus problems. there was no smell

no DIY answers i'm afraid, that was dealt with by surgery.

If it is just one nostril it is probably a sinus infection. Your vet should be able to advise you and first step is normally a course of antibiotics. This may clear it up but they do have a tendancy to come back and you may end up having to get his sinus's flushed.

My horse got a bit of a snotty nose last summer whilst he was on hay (is usually on haylage through the winter). I took him to the vets for a scan on his leg and whilst he was there a whole load of snot came down one nostril! The vet didn't seem worried in the slightest, said it was probably the hay and to soak it well or use haylage, which I did and he was fine after that.

Thanks for this - I changed his hay yesterday to newer bales and soaked - he didn't have any snot this morning so might be the answer. Thanks again.

my mare has been the same,i think it was dusty hay, have now changed to new hay and she seems alot better.

try soaking her hay if you already dont and buy her a resperiatory lick fom horselyz they are great and horses love them!
