So fed up. I slipped getting out of the bath a month ago and managed (some how) to sever 93% of my achilles tendon in my right leg. My consultant has decided against surgery at the present time, I am in a cast for approximately twelve weeks, then another scan to see if the injury is healing. If it is, I have to be in a cast for a further two months, with about four months of physio following this before I can walk properly and without pain. My consultant said that it could be at least nine months before I can ride my horse again and I'm at my wits end as to what to do.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this kind of injury and if there is anything that I can do to speed up my recovery time at all?

Thanks to anyone who may be able to help me. I'm so fed up.

Thanks.

eek, that makes me feel all tingley...

im sorry you are stuck like this for a while, i hope you make a speedy recovery!

Really sorry for you.
The only person I know who did this was in a cast for twelve weeks also & then was able to walk on it & just took it steady for a while. However he does not ride or do any other sports so was not putting it under any pressure. I guess it also depends on how bad the initial trauma is. Hopefully your consultant is just giving you the worst case scenario & you'll actually be back much sooner...

My boyfriends mum did this, shes a keen squash and tennis player so was sidelined for 6 months, she took glycerine (either as tablets, or a supplement I dont know) and my horse has done his DDFT so I feel him jelly for the glycerine. DR told her it had deff healed faster.

I've known two people with this injury, one did it running on soft sand and one playing basketball. Both had cast and then crutches for a long time but are now 100 %. I don't think you can do anything to hurry an injury like that, it just takes a long time to heal. Sorry.

i pulled both achilles tendons and could not ride for weeks when i was 17. i still have prob's with them now when riding and trying to keep my heals down.. hope you get better soon and make sure you rest

With these it seems to depend which consultant you are under as to whether thay operate or just cast. Normally they will keep you in the same plaster for 6-8 weeks to alow the scar tissue to form then after they scan they will either remove it and you start physio or they will seriel cast where they increase the stretch to the tendon which allows the scar tissue to lengthen.

However it really does depend on the consultant, how you heal, age etc. With these there is definately a wide variation with time factors.

Cant offer any advice but really feel for you. Im just recovering from my injury and it feels like such a long drawn out process. Hope you have supportive OH to look after you.

Get well soon

Sheesh. I would have thought surgery would have offered a quicker return than what is envisaged. Its got such a poor blood supply healing takes ages. You might speed up the healing with physio or self massage on the scar tissue - perfectly possible to do once you get the hang of it though hard work. And application of ice then heat to increase the blood supply. I had exceptionally bad achilles tendonitis which I had to avoid irritating further recently but still managed to ride just without putting weight into my heels. I have a jumping saddle and my mare was quite fat at the time.

If I compare myself to another runner who tore her achilles right through and was operated on immediately. We are both back running, but she has no ongoing problems while mine still aches though it works well. And I did all the ecentric exercises to strengthen it.

poor you i have done this twice ,once at 14yrs and once at 24yrs different legs but same accident showjumping they just snapped when i stood up to jump .op on first has left it very bad and stiff lots of scar tissue inside and out and terrible tendonitus now ,however that was donkeys years ago they will have better ops now i would think.other one was potted for long time and recovery was good dosent give me too much trouble ,when pot off make sure you get physio and wear a low heel no flat shoes. i did cheat and hacked out with pot on believe me were theres a will theres a way lol good luck

Ouch, that must hurt!!!. Makes me feel queasy just thinking about it.

Can't offer any help I'm afraid, just lots of sympathy and hugs!!

when i did mine i had surgery & no riding/trampolining for 8 months.

its not 100% now & i sometimes tear a few fibres if i do to much
