I fell off my youngster almost 2 months ago and ended up in hospital for 3 weeks - having my spleen removed, followed by a second op 5 days later after complications and then an infection !!! - I am feeling much better now but I was wondering........

How long before I can ride again ??? my physio has said '6 months' but I think she's being a bit drastic - I know I'm not ready yet but in another month or so I would think it would be fine

Does anyone know what is normal ???

I have a Drs follow-up app at the hosp at the beg of sept so will ask my specialist then, but any advice would be most welcome........

How strange I fell off 5 weeks ago and had to have my spleen removed!! I spoke to my practice nurse about exercise and she said 8 weeks before I do anything strenuous which I took to mean poo picking, lunging etc and then at least abother 4 weeks before I'll be ready to ride, but I think it depends on how you feel.

I have been feeling fine for 2 weeks and this week my tummy is feeling a lot less achey so I reckon the above time frame will work for me although my OH won't let me back on a horse until I have an air vest!

Ouch! To both of you. Very (very!) gentle hugs.

No idea on timings... sorry.

I broke my back three weeks ago. Very luckily I have full use of legs etc., and did not need an op (that's on the back burner for now, we're trying a back brace for six weeks). I was wearing a Rodney Powell BP, but it is a compression break, probably from trying to land on my feet.

My consultant walked into my room, after I'd spoken to another doctor (who had obvioulsy reported back!), saying "No camp! [I was due ot go to camp at Eland Lodge the following week]. No riding, no getting on a horse for at least three months!", then he introduced himself. Ho hum. Then I cried. Ah well.

When I bashed my head last year, it was three months before I was allowed back on.

Both times, no driving for six weeks minimum.

Fingers crossed you're fit and well sooner!

I wasn't wearing a BP but I was only going for a walk up the road with 2 friends it was a freak accident where nobody really knows what happened (I have no recollection of the accident or what happened for the whole of that day) but just goes as a reminder that it is a dangerous sport and you can never be 100% safe. I will however always wear a BP or my air vest when I get it for everything from now on.

HI Tilda - I'm at 8 weeks now, but not strong enough to poo pick yet - mind you they had to operate twice on me so it may be worse - I can drive the car if I take it easy and dont go too far and at the rate I'm going am hoping to back on a horse in another month - may wear my BP for the first few times though I cant imagine wearing it all the time, its like a straightjacket !!!

I was at least wearing my hard hat !!!! - we live in France and lots of people ride here without ............

Yes might be worse as I was only in hosp for 10 days, I can start driving this week but will be doing very short distances. I didn't get any physio and don't have to go back for a check up which I think is really bad, I am just walking with OH whilst he walks the dogs and playing with my toddler.

Thank god for hats would you believe that the girls at the yard next to us were still riding without hats despite witnessing me going off in the air ambulance - fools!

I hope your recovery continues and you get back on board very soon

Oh no poor you. No idea on your recovery but I'd listen to your physio! (says me who never listens and carries on lol)! I had my spleen removed by keyhole surgery and it was about 6-8 weeks before I was back riding - your surgery was somewhat more serious!

I had my spleen removed 10 years ago after a horse landed on me. I was in hospital for 3 weeks and then i had to wait another week to get my stitches out then i was straight back on the horse (only at a walk) then i went back to work :) I got my priorities right :)

Been warned though i put on a lot of weight within the first year as i couldn't do a great deal of excercise at first then it took me another couple of years to get the weight back off. You will be quite swollen for a while.

The French health system is very good - I had a check up at the hosp a week after they let me out, a nurse coming every day for the first 2 wks to give me injections against thrombosis and have another check up at the hosp in a couple of weeks, plus I have had 3 blood tests to make sure all is ok....

I did some groundwork with the horses this morning and felt fine so at least I can start lunging them them now - will back on as soon as I can...

Keyhole surgery would have been nice ............. I have a good 6 inch scar running upwards from my belly button !!!!

The French health service is brill - I had a nurse coming every day for the first 2 wks to give me injections against thrombosis, I've already been back once to the hosp for a checkup and have to go again in a couple of weeks and have had 3 blood tests to check that all is ok ..........

Worked the horses today on the lunge - which was fine so I can get them doing something and hopefully will be back on board soon
