Rushing in trot

Hi I was wondering if anyone had any tips for trying to get my horse to lengthen her trot. Schooling there is rarely a problem but hacking if she is not in front she will rush and her stride shortens and breaks regularly into canter. At this point I I bring her back to walk a few strides and ask again but sometimes she is just too fizzy by then to get a decent trot stride and I have to admit defeat and just walk for ease and saving an argument on the road.

Is this really a trot problem? It sounds more like a Becoming Tense In Company problem. If you treated the problem from that perspective maybe the trot would sort itself out?
