Rushing showjumping

I'm currently looking to affiliate my 15.2 tb x and am not worried about the height- he will jump 3ft course with ease.
However showjumping, although he looks fairly steady, he rushes his fences like mad and won't come back together after fences. At this height it is alright ( but doesn't make it feel great) but as the fences get bigger, am sure he will get into a pickle from rushing so much

He is a darling and would never stop, but any tips on getting him to slow down and come back together more easily- you can't use your hands at all to bring him back as he sticks his head up and the last person who had him pulled and he was rediculous with his mouth for ages afterwards.... so stronger bit not an option.

Any ideas?????

It sounds as though you need to get your horse more confident jumping - as crazy as that statement sounds considering he never stops.

It is likely your horse is jumping through fear - hence the speed and lack of control you're experiencing. I'd slow it down, introduce more complicated jumping exercises on line or ridden to encourage him to think rather than blindly jump.

My horse is the same, no matter how many lessons, flat or grid work we did she still charges at the jumps!! I do have control in between jumps, so not so bad!!
Just thats the way she is...think she is set in her ways at 20!

Lots of pole work to build his confidence and make jumping less exciting and scary. Work him around jumps without jumping to make it less "new" and "OH MY GOD!" etc.

Make it boring - think "oh god jumping *yawn* nothing to be excited/worried about" and do loads of gridwork of titchy jumps.
