Hi all

This is a query from a friend who is interested in Orlove Trotters.

Does anyone here remember an organisation called The Russian Horse Society?

It was not actually a breed society but the trading name of a dealer called -- I think -- Ron (don't remember his surname) who managed to get hold of and import a large number of Russian-bred horses of all types (including Orlov Trotters) in exchange for selling vet meds into Russia just after the fall of communism.

They used to have whole page adverts of very rough looking horses in a forerunner of Horse Deals (Horse Exchange?) but I am sure that they ceased trading a long time ago.

A dealer down the road used to sell Russian horses. Most were pretty rough really and I asked her if it was financially viable to drive all the way to Russia and back, via the ferry. Yes she said, so heaven knows what they were paying for them!

One or two were OK and they did sell. However, I spoke to a man selling wormers once and we got on to the subject of Russian horses and he said the insurance companies wouldn't touch them, because so many had come to the UK, been wormed and got in good condition and then dropped dead when they started work and it was found to be the worm damage they suffered in early life.

Cant say I am impressed by the Orlove Trotter & cant make head nor tail of the passport. He came over as a stallion back in the late 80's & at some stage gelded. His owner though likes him enough to want another, but is having problems locating one in the UK & it seems they are not easy to import anymore, so orangehouse if you can pm details if this dealer is still going as you mention "used to sell". Cheers
