S.America trekking holidays

Has anyone been?
I am doing a Argentina-chile-Argentina trek through parts of Andes with my sister and crazy grandfather (who will be 80 when we go!!!)
So does anyone have any clothing/equipment tips to take with me, am going for ten days next March and I am sooo excitied whhooopppeeeee!

Girl in tack shop, who sold me some fleece lined chaps, said she'd wished she had taken some to S America. Not sure where or when she went but was cold at night apparently.
