Sacroids to send back or keep her!

Hey!

Does anybody have any experience buying a horse which has sacroids? I have a lovely 4yo filly on trial at min, shes perfect everything I want :) we've really clicked :) except for fact she two sacroids 1 small one by her ear and another on her inside thigh.. Has anyone had any success with treatment? I'm worried about them spreading and don't want her to end up costing me a fortune on treatment..

If you were to vet the horse it would probably fail the vetting - I was told sarcoids were a bit of a no no! It really does depend on what type of sarcoids they are because some can be aggressive. But , my friend bought a horse with sarcoids down her cheek and there doesn't seem to be an issue! Personally I would ask the owner if you could arrange a vetting or just get a vet out to identify what type they are and if they are treatable. There are not always an issue and there are treatments- like putting a ring on them but, you really do need to find out the type. Hope they clear up - she sounds lovely :)
 
Its luck of the draw isn't it. I bought a horse without sarcoids when vetted. 3 months later she had one above her eye. £4k later it was removed by radiation therapy. 9 months later 11 sarcoids treated with Liverpool cream!

If you have this horse, make sure you get the sarcoids treated!
 
Location of them doesn't sound great, they'll rub on bridle and rug leg straps!

You could photo them ans send the pics to Prof Knottenbelt (sp) who's an expert at Liverpool Uni to see what kind.

I assume she's pretty much free because of them?

They won;t be insurable and could cost £thousands - if you have this to spend maybe risk it?
 
I'd definitely not keep her. There's a thread on here I think, about a horse that had one on it's ear, and had had repeated treatment, inc. laser treatment if I remember rightly, and had very little of that ear left. It was a horrible sad story. You might be lucky and the sarcoids she has never change, spread, or become aggressive. Or they might. I wouldn't take that chance, frankly. Strongly doubt you'd get insurance to cover any treatment either, given it's a pre-existing condition, and that's going to cost you. More than the financial cost is the emotional cost as well.

Depends on the treatment ... Liverpool cream treatment has cost me about £300.

And yes Prof Knottenbelt is brilliant and a lovely chap, he will give sound advice. I can let you have his email address if you wish to PM me. He doesn't mind assessing photos and advising.
 
I have a mare who had an aggressive fibroblastic one - that was treated dropped off and has not reappeared in a year. I have my mare on turmeric now - if you join the facebook turmeric user group there are loads of people on there who have had success with sarcoids and feeding turmeric.
It wouldn't put me off a horse.

There are definitely loads of different opinions on this- it seems to be luck of the draw whether once treated they re-appear or not. If the horse ticks absolutely all boxes aside from the sarcoids, I'd still strongly consider buying but I'd expect the price to reflect this.
 
I've had several horses with sarcoids, none of which caused any problems.

I had a gelding that had one just above his eye that I had frozen off, it never came back.

The others had various small ones that I either left alone or treated topically.

If she is perfect in every way and her price reflects her sarcoids I would get a Vet out to look at them. Just bare in mind that she would not be able to be insured for sarcoids.
 
We bought a horse (was 9 at the time) with 2 sacroids that we treated with liverpool cream. Hes now 22 and they've never come back, you wouldnt know he ever had them. We've also got a welsh D that we got as a 4 year old. He was sacriod free until he was 17 and he's now had afew, one has been banded, one cut off and the others have been left. They dont look the best but dont cause any issues. My experience of them wouldnt put me off if the horse was perfect.
 
Thanks for all the advice everyone :) its very hard to make decision as she is perfect other than the 2 small sacroid's :( I'm mad about her.. It would be so much easier if we didn't get on so well :p
 
i'm another one that would send the horse back i'm afraid
even if you could get the horse a lot cheaper or even free the cost and upset of dealing with sarcoids just isn't worth it
there is a small chance that you could treat these ones and they could go away and never come back , but its just not a risk i would take
 
I bought my 4yo mare knowing she had 2 sarcoids. She passed a 5stage vetting with flying colours. We are not insured for sarcoids but one has been treated with Liverpool cream and the other is on her armpit and hasn't been treated. I love her and her sarcoids have been the least of her problems since I got her. There is no rhyme or reason to sarcoids and how/if they develop. If the mare is perfect for you then keep her. It's not her fault. You may be lucky and they don't cause you any problems, or you may be unfortunate and they cause lots of issues. Regardless of a horses ailment and issues, you will always have tough decisions to make and sometimes they are the ones you would never think of.
 
My horse had sarcoid that developed whilst he was away being schooled. One in his left ear, one below his left eye, one on his inner thigh, hind leg & one on his penis. He was 4 years old when discovered. He is homebred and never had them before. They were all treated successfully, inner thigh with Liverpool cream, ear & eye treated with chemo drugs injected into the sarcoids & one removed surgically, all treated via Liverpool university & vet & none returned. Jack is 9 this year. Vet & Liverpool uni felt they appeared due to stress of being sent away for schooling. If it was me I'd buy the horse, good luck
 
I bought mine with them on his stomach, back legs and sheath. I agreed to buy him providing the owners treated the sarcoids, drawn into contract. They held up their end and i bought him at a reasonable price to reflect this. I would worry about the ear and see what the vet suggests, they wont fail a vetting unless the sarcoids are around tack areas. Mine passed his 5 stage. His unfortunately didnt all come off after the liverpool cream, however he is fit and healthy and they have dropped off. 1 left and hopefully that will be gone soon.

If the horse has a fantastic temperament and trainable etc then you need a educated answer from the vet.
So many horses have them and some go and never come back, some are stubborn and some get worse, you just wont know.
