Hi, my horse is currently having investigations done due to intermittent lameness, the vets said she thinks it might be a sacroiliac problem. He's going for a bone scan at Rainbows, Malton next week. She said he would need a steroid cortisone injection to treat this. Has anyone had any experience with these? Whats the protocol for after the injection? (E.g how long off after injection, if any?) How long does the injection usually last?

Thank you

My horse had this done in Sept.last year. He was not picking up left canter, sometimes 'hoppy' in trot and could feel like the handbrake was stuck on behind. Anyway he'd had a DDFT injury the previous year but was still not totally right. So we nerve blocked the hind suspensorys and it made no difference, so went straight for injecting the SI joints. He was box rested for 48 hrs after the injections. I think it should have been a bit longer but he goes bananas after box rest so we wanted to minimise the excitement when he got back in the field. Vet told me to get back on after 3 days I think it was and if it had worked, I would notice a difference immediately. I was sceptical but I schooled him and asked for left canter and it was there and has been ever since and he is moving so much better than he ever has. His hind legs are so active now. He's a thoroughbred so has never been extravagant but he would often start a session very stiff and shufflly behind but there's none of that anymore. I can't tell you how long the injections last but the vet said to me that if you get 3 months of improvement then it's likely to continue on that way. We are at 4 months so fingers crossed it's going to last.

My rehab was different to those listed above. I think we just had a couple of days off then started walking rehab (not ridden) gradually building up by 5 minutes each week, then introducing trotting. We started off in the school but this wasn't working so vet advised long reining in straight lines on the road (quiet roads round us).
We switched to ridden a bit earlier than planned because she started to get silly on the long reins and it was easier to control her when ridden. In all it probably took us 6 months before we got close to being back in full work (think we started popping jumps at 8 months)

Thank you for all your replies. Jacks had a bone scan and they think he had OCD in his stifle, had anyone had experience with this? They also think he's pulled supensory ligament. The hot stops on the bone scan showed left hind pedal, bilateral fetlock, slightly on SI joint and stifle.

Mine had arthritis of the spine (only7) and we think he did the splits in the field at one point to cause the SI injury. We are also now investigating his stifle as he just isnt right in one leg.
Which vet is looking at yours?

Barney. He's coming home today!! He's not having surgery he is just having a Steriod injection into stifle. He pedal bone is rotated so needs some special shoes on for that.
