would a sanctuary re-home ponies that are old or do they need to look like hat racks? as what if you can not afford to have them pts? :(

You call the hunt?

ETA actually sorry not sure if this is actually a cheaper option, but it's what we do for our sheep.

*some* 'sanctuarys' will take anything.
Lots are overflowing.
As awful as it sounds can you not shop around for a decent price/payment plan for having pony PTS in comfort of own home?

Also some vets will let you sort out a payment plan, especially if you've been a good customer in the past and if you explain the circumstances?

Unfortunately :(

I'm really sorry to hear that.

Your first port of call should be the hunt, as that is your cheapest option for disposal. Give them a buzz tell them your situation and at what cost they can put the ponies down for you.

Do not starve them in the false assumption that a charity will take them from you - as you will (probably) prosecuted first for cruelty.

You could try a local charity near to you - but they are full to overflowing......

of course i would not starve them in a false assumption that a charity would take them :-( i love them dearly. I am not cruel. One does not cost me too much as holds weight (too well!)

Hunt still costs a lot of money when you have more than one - also, how on earth could i watch that?!

You don't have to watch and the hunt know what they are doing.

In your situation I'd do whatever it took, to make the money to have them destroyed.

Less than the vet, and of course you don't have to watch.

Pick up the phone, talk to the huntsman and explain your situation. Ask him what the cheapest price is he could do (it will probably be less than a horse) and if you can take them to the kennels rather than the hunt come out, will be less again.

If you do go with the hunt, make sure the huntsman knows that you will not be in a position to hold the ponies for him - to ensure he brings someone with him.

What part of the country are you in?

You say you have more than one that needs pts?

I'm afraid they really are your responsibility and any reasonable horse owner should have made provisions or planned this earlier in advance. It is not fair to expect charities to take on your old horses just because you can't afford to have them pts.

I go by what other's have said - hunt or your other option is to call the RSPCA and explain your predicament, they do have the means to humanely destroy horses, however it would be prudent to also offer a small donation in return as it costs the charity money to fund this.

And I am of the opinion, contraversially i expect, that old useless horses SHOULDN'T be the ones taking up vital rescue places. The whole premise of these rescues really work, if they have adpotable animals predominantly, animals who 80% of the time will be taken on by someone thereby freeing up the space again.
Too many people are putting their oldies in rescue and somewhere out there, there's a useful horse who needs that space and a potential loaner wanting that useful horse!
It's sad, but until we get our crazy horse population sorted in the country, I think your oldies should be humanely destroyed at home, at peace, thanking them for their years of friendship. As mine will be, god willing.

How about doing right by your animals instead of going away on holiday with your OH?

Good point!!! Change of opinion on my behalf - OP don't call the RSPCA as you would seriously be taking the **** and using up charity money when you actually have the money to go swanning off abroad on holiday but don't want to do right by your elderly horses.

Dear me.

Hang on a minute, how old are these horses, are they too old to ride still or be a good companion for another horse?
Someone may think a 20yr old horse is old, ive got a 38yr old pony still going strong!

Do you really think life is so black and white?!

O/H ''won'' a holiday abroad from his work, place of his choice hence i was asking. Of course i wouldn't spend money going abroad instead on the ponies.

Too old/condition to ride. Yes, i asked about loaning out as a companion in another thread but in this climate i don't think many people are taking on companions.

I dunno Scampi, life needs to be pretty black and white when you have horses you can't look after.
If you have a nice TV, sell it, clothes you don't wear - ebay. Phones that are better than they need to be - get rid etc etc
They even do those pay day loans, assuming you work. I'd take one of those, sort the ponies then pick up the flack later myself, personally.

Get the meat man to take them away. You don't have to pay then. They do have to be free from drugs though and have a passport where the part about human consumption is not signed.

Good advice. Cancel the gym membership too, lots of ways to save money. And would there be any way of 'selling' the holiday if it was a prize?

People seem very happy on here just to give your horses to the meat man who have loved you and you've spent so much time with over the years, i could never do that, I love my horses, they are not cans of dog meat.

Then cash the fund in?

Sell it to a workmate?

Sell it back to company at a reduced rate and explain you are hard up and really would appreciate the money instead?

Cancel the gym and walk to the yard instead, or poo pick fields for cheaper tack.

I've done all of the above before now.

Just to add, I've also given up my rented accommodation and slept in my jeep to pay a vets bill before now.

Where there's a will there's a way.

Scampi why are you ignoring the practical advice you are being given? As MV says, there is always a way.
Can someone who has had their horse destroyed by the hunt, tell me how much that is?

Leave the charity spaces for those who need it and earn some extra money to either keep the ponies or pay for them to be pts in their familiar surroundings with a bit of dignaty.

See the prostitution thread, apparently it's not illegal! If only I'd know at the time :p

All jokes aside, if no one knows shall I phone my local huntsman and find out?
