Today was a terrible day at our yard,

My lad and 3 other geldings were hooning about as they tend to do in the field.

The 4 of them crashed into each other, 1 horse was killed instantly another went down but got up but he in a bad way, and vet seeing if he makes it though the night, possible internal damage and spinal I think but did not want to go over to find out as owner of dead horse was sat with hers crying while vet was tending this horse.

My horse and my best mates came off totally unscathed.

Heartbroken for the lass who horse dies and the other girl.

Bleeding geldings and there silly field capers :-( they always charging about and play fighting each other.

Ah, Hell :(

Really sorry to read that: horses (especially geldings) will be horses and they get away with it most of the time. I am sad for the lass that lost hers that today was one of those unlucky times when they didn't.

I hope she (and the other owner - fingers crossed her lad pulls through) takes comfort from the fact that she was allowing her boy to be with his mates and act and live as naturally as possible.

Thinking of you at the end of such an awful day x

OMG, I am so very sorry, truly I am. I lost my horse in a similar accident many years ago, and have never forgotten it. :(

((((((((((HUGS)))))))))).

How awful, RIP the poor horse that died. At least it was instant, my heart goes out to the one who's poorly.

Does your yard not have individual turnout? This is the exact reason why they should- Id be a bit worried if i knew my horse was playing/galloping about with others as this is how they get injured/loose shoes! (I know its nice for them to play, but still!)

It's just awful , such a freak thing to happen. Another one had his leg broken last year in with the boys, he recovered though and is now kept alone but next to them, he still charges about when they do. I doubt you could ever sto horses hurting themselves in the field. Our lot are all big lads and charge about like nutters sometimes. And the YO is very good , she is careful with turn out if ground bad etc, does her best to help reduce chance of them hurting themselfs.
I'm so glad my horse is ok and my friends but feel terrible for the other two girls. Could quite easily of been my boy.
I'd never keep my lad alone as don't think it's right but its such a stress when you see them all charging about, skidding everywhere, they having fun but for us to watch its scary.

Yes dusty our yard does to individual turnout and some use it, me personally I don't like it. I think horses need to interact with each other for their happiness but I do see why people do it. But for me I like my boy in with others, even if it risks him being hurt. He loves his chums, always playing and grooming them. I'd not take that away from him.

How awful for everyone, my heart goes out the girl who has lost her horse, what a nightmare, and sending many vibes to the horse who is in the balance tonight, hope things go his way xx

But Dusty is that not what horses do in the wild and why we have fields so horses can play gallop and have fun with their own kind??

Dusty not many yard do Individual turnout, we do not Have not the acreage.
Yes horses are horses and accidents do happen . As accidents happen in playgrounds with children. You cannot wrap them up all the time. I would not want my horses on their own. Only yesterday our new livery was in with my pony for the first time after a week in adjacent field. They had a good hard fracas's lots of bum to bum booting. I put my ponies boots on as she is only tiny. Today they were fine. This was just a freak accident which could just as easily happened if a horse tried to get to others and crashed into fence.

RIP horse

I agree, and what a wise answer on such a stressful day.

My friend's horse was injured in individual turnout with dry stone walls - his mare climbed up the wall to fight with the mare next door, the wall collapsed and his mare was on box rest for weeks, the other horse was put down. Horses do injure themselves, accidents can happen. They could get kicked out hacking! You can't wrap them up in cotton wool..

Hope the horse pulls through.xx
