Does your yard not have individual turnout? This is the exact reason why they should- Id be a bit worried if i knew my horse was playing/galloping about with others as this is how they get injured/loose shoes! (I know its nice for them to play, but still!)

I'm sure it wasn't meant to be but this is a little insensitive... :( hindsight is a wonderful thing, but horses will be horses and hooning about is what they do all the time. I agree, at least it was instant though.

Such an unfortunate thing to happen, how awful. RIP horsey and I hope the other one is ok. Poor owners :(
 
Oh gosh, how tragic. Thoughts to ALL of the owners - I am glad yours is unhurt OP but I am sure you are all shaken up. Thoughts are with the owners of the other two geldings :(:(

Will you post an update on the second horse when you know more?

I totally agree that horses need to interact, and whilst ours do have individual turnout, there is social grooming/nuzzling and playing that goes on over the fences, and play time running up and down fields with each other.

We're all allowed to have our own opinions, and i just choose individual turnout. If i had more than one horse and my own land, I would turn them out together. I just dont want someone else's horse injuring mine, or vice versa!
 
Yes i will ket you know how the other lad is, I guess we should find out tomorrow if he going to be ok. When I left he was still stuck in field unable to move, I'm not sure how they got him out but I think he must be either at vet hospital or in a stable as someone text to say he was on a drip and they hoping he makes it through the night :-(
I'm praying he does the owner is only young early 20's and had since he was a youngster, quite a number of years.

Have to admit its something that worries me as my little mare is out with a lot of big horses but I'd rather see her happy than wrap her up in cotton wool 24/7 plus she's pretty good at dodging about when they're all galloping!!!
 
Dusty85 no offensce was taken from me by your post, as I said I do understand why some use indervidual turn out by me personally I don't agree with it, even having lost a horse a few years back, he was kicked in field shattering his front leg, it was horrendous, he was in deep shock by the time the vet arrived and managed to put his out his misery. Something I hope never happens to me again but still even after that, I like my lad in with the herd. Bit that's just my views.
 
How terrible, so sad for you all. In my opinion the horses have had a happier life turned out with others- it's what I'd choose for mine every time. Horrific accident but it was just that, an accident between horses who were happy and having fun as nature intended them too. Hugs xx
 
Im glad I didn't cause offence, or to be 'insensitive', as no ill was meant.

Having had another horse terrorise mine in the past that is just what i think now!
I hope the other horse pulls through, and that yours isnt too upset by it all xx
 
Oh I am so sorry to read this. Absolutely awful :( I have to say though, all of the major accidents that have happened on my farm have been due to this sort of cavorting around too. Horses are such stupid creatures when they go on a rampage around their fields like this and I've seen them crash into each other, or gate posts or whatever is in their way. Thank goodness your horse was okay but so sad for the girls whose horses were injured/died :(
 
What a horiffic freak accident, I feel for all of you. :(

Horses are capable of such great feats of endurance and durability, but they can be so fragile at times :(

So sorry for all of you. I agree , mine wouldnt be on individual turn out because quality of life is so important. Horses are herd animals and as much as I cringe when they hoon around especialy when the ground is this hard it is a better life than in a stable 23 hours a day to keep them safe
 
Had tears in my eyes reading that, totally shocking, hope the injured horse pulls through. Can't imagine what the owner of the dead horse is going through, poor girl.
 
I can see both sides, mine was with 2 others and got kicked and broke his elbow and whilst I would love to see him back out with others I wouldn't risk it. He is right next to them so they can still interact over the fence but I personally would not risk what happened before happening again.

I hope the poorly one has pulled through the night.

Such a tragedy, but at the end of the day they were being horses, and one day the owner/s will take comfort from the fact that they were having a good time when it happened and at least the owner of the one who didn't make it knows he didn't suffer.

I don't like individual turnout either unless it's absolutely necessary and the horse can see it's neighbours and interact with them.

Hope the other two weren't too upset and traumatised by events.

Well, sadly, this type of thing is not that much of a "freak" accident - I've been at yards where three fatalities occurred and countless injuries - my own mare has only escaped by the narrowest of squeeks so it's not just geldings.

Furthermore, as most people presumed me to be the "big strong bloke on hand" - guess who got the job of waiting for the vet, tending the victims and clearing away the carnage! I always did it when asked but sometimes I was an emotional wreck for days after especially when a favourite was involved.

I too couldn't put my horse through individual turnout.

So sad for all involved. Sounds like the lads were having a blast beforehand!

Very sad for all concerned but at least horses were doing something they wanted to do rather than passing away in an activity of our choice.
Thoughts with the 2nd horse as doesnt sound good & fwiw I've seen nasty accidents with individualt/o too with horses coming over or through fences or striking out at a neighbour through fence..or even one tragedy with one rolling too close to a gate. At the end of the day horses are a design fault! Thoughts with OP at this very sad time.
