Sad day, freak accident

What an awful day for all concerned. I feel for the poor owner who lost her horse. Poor girl. Heartbreaking. I hope the injured horse will be ok. Glad your horse is ok, though. Unfortunately, as others have said, horses being horses.

RIP poor horse xx

What an awful thing to happen. I hope the other horse pulls through. I agree with what SF says, that is how all the major accidents I have known have happened with horses. My own mare had her shoulder broken crashing into another horse (or gate post, not sure which). I have lost two geldings to broken legs in fields. A friend of mine lost her horse instantly to a broken neck due to a collision. Just awful. RIP lovely boy xx

So sorry to hear this, poor girl who has lost her horse and the worry for the other one over her animal. In all the years I have been around horses I have never heard of any deaths from them having a run around in the fields but even hearing this now I would still never keep a horse on its own, they are herd animals and should always have companions. This was a very unfortunate accident and doesn't happen regularly and shouldn't discourage people from turning horses out with company.

Freak accident. Really horrible for everyone concerned and I suspect those whose horses came through unscathed will be feeling guilty that theirs survived. No reason to but that's human nature. My gelding is big and young and really loves to play too. We try to reduce the risk by picking his field friend carefully and every now and then he gets chucked in with my old mare so as to learn to wind his neck in. We have found that we do has to split him and his bestest friend up from time to time as they do go too far.

I know of someone whose horse was killed by lightening. Another who randomly fell over and broke his pelvis, another who broke his leg. These things happen. It's poor comfort for the owners but tragedies and accidents happen whatever you try to do. I did have one horse on individual turnout but he had been turned out by himself all his life and seemed to severely lack equine social skills. We tried on numerous occasions but the punch ups were just not worth it.

That's so sad, sorry to hear that. Only horse owners will know what the girl who lost her horse is going through. Hope the other horse is going to be alright, and thank god that your boy and your friends horse are ok. Like everyone has said, sometimes these thinks happen, though it always seems so cruel that they do x

Seen the other horse this morning, they have ruled out internal damage so that's good. He won't put weight on his front leg so they X-ray it but found no fractures so they think maybe its fractured in his shoulder. They unsure what's going on with his back end, they have had a feel inside but could feel no breaks in pelvis so still think spinal injury.

When i left the yard and vets were splinting his leg to be able hopefully get him in a trailer and across to vets hospital from there they can do deeper X-rays.

The poor owner is traumatised bless her. Just a terrible couple of days for all at our yard, it's a small yard with only a handful of liveries everyone is upset.

Checked my boy and my friends again today they are totally fine, we giving them the day off though in case they are bruised etc from the collision. They seemed happy enough eating in the field, so for that I feel very lucky.

So so sorry about this, its terrible, saw this sort of thing before, two horses playing, crashed into each other, one died instantly the other put down as broke leg.

Hope other horse going to be ok

Oh this is so sad and as you say a freak accident. Poor poor horses and the poor owner. How blooming tragic. Will keep hoping for the other injured horse but perhaps even I am thinking may be better to PTS(sorry just sounds so distressed). I hope they get to the bottom of it and the horse doesnt suffer for too long. How sad for you all. You never know whats round the corner thank fully. Just keep supporting the poor lady who lost hers, thats all you can do. It could have been any of them.

OMG - certainly was a freak accident. Sorry for all concerned and horses involved. :(

I hope badly injured horse makes it through the night and injuries not as bad as first thought.

What a truly horrible incident.
I hope your friend gets some positive answers from the x-rays, and thoughts with all involved, especially the owner of the horse who died.
How tragic and upsetting for all of you :(

How horrible for all concerned, horses and human.

I would turn my girl out with others and have in the past, but it would have to be a massive field, summer time and plenty of good grazing to keep them busy. I know it can and does still happen, but I'd prefer the odds tbh. Scarey!

What an awful experience for all concerned. My thoughts are with you all.

We used to watch 2 horses and a pony 'dance' in the field and marvel that they didn't crash - the Appy was the choreographer. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to separate them as quality of lifehas to be the over-riding consideration for me and the opportunity to play with friends must come into that.

A friend had a mare who was kept on her own and managed to break her shoulder overnight, they really are rather fragile creatures.

What an awful situation for you all at your yard. Horses are so fragile but at least they were doing what they enjoyed.

Hope the injuried horses xrays come back ok and makes a full recovery.

Rip poor horsey

Such a sad story - good healing vibes to those involved - horse and people. Its so scary watching them hoon around and hearing this has been a shock. Bubblewrap doesnt come in big enough sheets though.

Having lost a horse to colic I know how awful it to lose the object of your horsey passion so easily.

How horrible - rip and best wishes for a speedy recovery and ((hugs)) to all who need them.

I quite like watching my guys playing in the field, never heard of an accident due to collision in my 20 or so years riding but horses tend to be out 24/7 over here so less pent up energy I guess.

how sad.

I really feel for you all.

I lost my mare in 2005.
She was playing in the filed and ran headfirst into a tree.
She was killed instantly.
It was devastaing and even now i can think about it too much.

What a sad sad situation … there really is nothing worse especially when you’re not expecting it and didn’t say goodbye. I lost my TB last year in a very freak accident in the field and to this day I cant think about what happened as it just sets me off crying (yet again) … RIP horsey and best wishes for the other poor horse – any news? x
