Went down the yard this morning and saw my yard owners with their TB, Charlie, at the back of the field fenced off separately from the other horses. I thought this was strange as when they fence him off from the others (he's a gentle wimp), they keep my TB in with his since she's his girlfriend.

It turns out that he got kicked in the leg by one of the other horses and it shattered the bone. He couldn't put any weight on it but he was still trying to graze, bless him. The vet came at 11 and put him down. While the vet was preparing him, I was with Hattie in the field near the fence and she whickered over to him and one of the other cobs, Mac, stood by the fence watching too. When he went down, all the horses looked. :(

I feel really sad as Charlie was the one Hattie always went to in the field so felt it was important that she saw what happened to him so that she wouldn't wonder where he was.

He was a lovely horse, had a really loud funny throaty whinny and had the softest mane to plait.

RIP Charlie.

that's awful what a dreadfully sad time for you all poor charlie. It's the scenario we all dread each time we approach our horses in their field but that could easily happen to any of us x

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I saw the yard owners today and they are still upset over what happened. The horse that kicked Charlie will have his own paddock now as he has become a bit of a bully with the other horses and seems to be getting worse. When I put Hattie out yesterday, he chased her around the field until Hattie's other friend, a little Welsh section B, chased him off. So they have separated him as all the other horses get on together. :(

I have also been in this horrid, horrid place, and know just how you are all feeling. :( Worst place - ever ..........:(:(

Condolences to you and Charlie's connections. Keeping you all in my thoughts.

RIP, Charlie.

Generally, I have no idea why livery yards still turn out in herds. When I did livery, everyone had their own paddock if they wanted, and mine do even now.

It's only a tiny livery yard, almost like a family. I'm just one of 4 liveries, the rest of the horses belong to the family who are the YOs. There isn't enough acreage to for each person to have their own big private paddock. I don't know of any livery yard in the area where I am that offers such turnout, there just isn't enough land around here for that to happen.
