Today I went for my usual Sunday morning hack with a friend who I met a few years ago out riding (Toff was napping and I asked if she minded being a lead!) We got on really well and since then we have hacked out together pretty much every Sunday.
We had been for a lovely hack (albeit the beasties were lively) and we were just going our separate ways when they started to act strangely. I turn left to go up a track towards home and friend carries on straight behind hedge so horses can't see each other but can hear and usually not a problem. Anyway as soon as they were apart friend's horse started screaming and yelling, which made Toff rear right up, she has never done that before! I got off as don't do rearing and she went up 3 more times. I managed to hang on, and then lead her home. At this point friends horse had quietened down. I got back on when home and schooled her for a few mins (needed more exercise) when I got a phone call from friend, her horse had dropped dead
Luckily Sooty was in thinking mode and asked Mac to take Toff and un tack her etc and I drove up track to meet friend. Apparently her horse had started to sway so she got off (very lucky) and in a few strides she was gone. We assume it was a heart attack. Horse was only 10. Friend is very upset (understandably). I phoned vets and they arranged for Holts to come and take her and I also removed her tack
Really horrible end to a lovely ride. Just goes to show can't take anything for granted and also always take your mobile when hacking!!
