i don't know if anyone remembers me posting about my old dog who was diagnosed with congestive heart failure back in Feb. He was started on medication and picked up alot. he was enjoying little walks, his food, being with us and the other dogs, barking at the door. However over the past couple of weeks he has started to deteriorate, he is urinating alot more often and loads more. He seems quite uncomfortable when getting down, altho he is okay when getting up and laying down. His heckles are sometimes up. My OH took him to the vet today and basically he may have kidney problems, may have tumours and could be going senile. On the basis of this information we have decided the kindest thing to do is pts, which we are planning to do next week. My OH didn't want to make that decsion today on his own and the vets are shut now until next week. He is still functioning reasonably well, enjoying his food and being fussed and doesn't seem to be too uncomfortable atm, altho of course if he was we would go to the emergency vet. We both feel really sad, but he s 16 and had a good life with us after a really bad start. We got him as a rescue when he was about 2. I feel abit better about it now i have written it down.

:( I feel for you. I really do. :( OH and I had to make a similar decision back in April, and it really was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I even thought after Tugg went that perhaps we had been too hasty in making our decision aboout him. But in hindsight, it really was the only thing to do. It sounds like your lad has similar symptoms as Tugg, which really makes me think that you will be doing the right thing by him.

Don't ever feel guilty about this - there are certain things as animal owners we are obliged to do, and this is one of them. It is our responsibility, and you are being very brave in not prolonging his suffering. When the time comes, we will all be here for you - there are some fantastic people on here, with incredibly waterproof shoulders and bags of support.

Thinking of you.

C xx

Thanks for all your kind thoughts, they are very helpful as they give you a sense of perspective

Sorry to read this Reddie, so hard when they have been such a big part of your life for so long. You are doing the right thing though, 16 is a great age for a dog and as they say better a day too early then a day too late. He has obviously had a fantastic life with loving responsible owners, you must now take comfort from that. (hug)

16 years is a fantastic age for a dog, i'm so sorry you've had to make the hardest of decisions, but he will thank you for it.

Enjoy the time you have with him and know that you have done your best by him x

I can only echo what others have said, the hardest and bravest decision, as owners I guess most of us have been through this and it never gets any easier.

Hugs to you and your OH

As others are saying, you know it's the only decision. What a wonderfully long life and you will have such good memories to look back on. We have all been there with our beloved dogs! My heart goes out to you both
