Sad Few Weeks

We have had a sad few weeks and lost 2 horses at my yard, plus my friend sadly said goodbye to her old boy this week.

First was Frankie. He'd had suspensory problems 8 years ago, and his owner took the decision to operate. She went on to compete and have lots of fun with him, but sadly he went lame a couple of months ago, and the ligament started to break down and there was nothing more could be done. He was a big gentle giant of a horse and we and his mares will miss him.

Second was Alize. Weekend before last, there was a bit of a kerfuffle in the field, and tragically, he got kicked and his leg snapped. Was very traumatic for everyone there, but luckily, someone was in the field when it happened, and the vet was there within about 20 minutes.

Thirdly, earlier this week, my friend who I made at the first yard I was on with Dolly, lost her old boy Sasha. He would have been 35 this year and she'd had him since he was 4. He was colicking, and the vet did what he could, but sadly age was against him. I rode him a lot in the past and he was always naughty for me! As a child growing up, he was the horse I dreamed of owning. A 15 hand, bay gelding! Not one of mine fits the criteria

Not sure why I posted this, I think am feeling a bit down as Mac's arthritis has been bad the last couple of days, and although I know it has been caused by him being silly in the field and acting like a 2 year old, it makes you realise how quickly they can be taken away.

I'm so sorry. So many losses in quick succession can really take their toll. Treasure the time they're with us :)

Lots of hugs, it reminds us all they are only loaned to us for a short time and how we should treasure each moment with them, my thoughts to all involved and I hope mac's arthritis settles soon (((( hugs ))))

I think that is it exactly. We should cuddle them as much as we can. Mac was better today. He just struggled for the farrier yesterday, so he is coming back Wednesday, as long as he continues to improve.

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

It is so sad when they leave us, even with the oldies who have had a terrific life, it isn't any easier. I hope their owners can take comfort from the fact that they were there when their horse needed them. At the end of the day that is what matters most.

I lost my two original horses within 18 months of each other, both at very respectable ages and both coming to me straight from their breeders. I miss them so much, all those years seem to be but a moment gone when it comes to saying goodbye.

No wonder you're feeling blue, its so hard to see friends lose much loved horses, particularly, Sasha after spending a lifetime together.

Small comfort, I know, but the loved and missed horses are the fortunate ones.
