Sad goodbye to a much loved mare

Sadly I had to let my beautiful old mare go on Saturday evening.

I am pretty sure she had had a seizure just one hour after I had turned her out, but luckily so found her. Vet diagnosed colic and I am not Vet but all of the symptoms to me point to a seizure or a stroke.

I held her in my arms for the last hour of her life. And made the decision to let her rest in peace. At 29 years old, it really wouldn’t have been fair to put her through any more. She was cantering happily down the field just two hours earlier and as much as it broke my heart, I knew I had to let her go. She will be back with Alfie now who some of you may remember, I sadly lost back in February.

Rest in Peace Pixie, you were much loved and will be sadly missed. ?

So sorry for your loss. From the pictures, it’s clear how much you loved her, and how much she cared about you too x

Sleep well lovely girl, I remember your cheeky face and how even as a late teenager people weren't allowed to jump you.....not because you couldn't, but because you really could and terrified people ? She had the best retirement and all love anyone could have given her with you SP, big hugs xxx

I'm very sorry for your loss. But it does make me a bit happy to hear how an older horse was loved and looked after until the end.

Sad to read of your loss SP….big hug x…..you gave her a dignified, peaceful, comforting end to a wonderfully long life, which is the best any of us horseowners could ever hope for when the end comes. I hope that comforts you too.
I love her multi-coloured mane and the pic of you hugging, that’s one to treasure …another big hug ?
