I've been asked to post the following by Bransby Home of Rest for Horses to inform you all about the sad sad loss of Carrot.
The statement is as follows:

"Bransby is very sad to report that we have had to say goodbye to our much loved resident and adoption star Carrot. This elderly gent was rescued with his close companion Spud in September 2009, both being found in terrible condition. Their neglect was the subject of a high profile campaign on the Horse and Hound website as images of the two ponies shocked people all over the country.

In the capable hands of Bransby staff, Carrot and Spud both made a fantastic recovery and were able to enjoy life again with all the special veteran care they deserved. Despite his advanced years, Carrot gained more than 100kg in five months with just good food and routine care and was a very characterful pony; bright and sociable and not always as co-operative as our staff might have liked! When we sadly lost Spud to cancer earlier this year, Carrot coped well with the loss of his friend and was able to rely on his other Bransby companions to help him adjust.
Carrot has been full of life and character since his rescue. In recent weeks, however, staff have been concerned that this special pony was starting to lose weight and showing signs of struggling to get up after lying down in his stable or rolling in the field. Our vet examined Carrot and discovered that the left side of his heart had stopped working. This meant that Carrot’s remaining heart and bodily systems were having to work very hard to try and keep his body going, but they would not be able to keep this up for very long. There is no treatment for such a serious condition and to ensure that Carrot was not put at risk because of his failing heart, the decision was made to put him to sleep.
Carrot was believed to be more than 30 years old when we lost him. This is a great age for a pony, particularly one that has suffered the effects of severe neglect. When Bransby took on the care of Carrot and Spud, we were determined to give them both the very best quality of life we could for as long as possible, but not to shy away from our responsibility as owners when the time came to say good bye.

Thank you to everyone who has followed Carrot’s progress from rescue to rehabilitation and those who have supported him through the Bransby adoption scheme."

I have also been sent some wonderful photos of him and as soon as i figure out how to put them on here i will.

RIP little man. Run free with your best pal Spud xx

Very sad news but I am pleased he had a good couple of years and pass on thanks to all involved for caring and ensuring that he had a dignified and peaceful end.

RIP Carrot.

I still find the images of them both from when they were rescued so terribly shocking.

Thank you to everyone here who ensured their rescue, in particular to the non horsey person who originally posted about them on HHO to bring them to our attention. And of course to the Bransby Home of Rest for Horses for giving them such wonderful care whilst they were with them.

Oh that's so sad. It was bad enough when Spud went :( At least they both knew kindness and love at the end of their lives. Well done all those involved in their rescue and rehab x

RIP Carrot. Thank goodness both him and Spud were able to enjoy a couple of years of care and happyness and had kind souls on hand to make that important last decision. At least they will be running free together now.

RIP Carrot :(

They were both very lucky to have lots of fabulous care for their last years - certainly better then starving to death in the field they were in. I know that Bransby will only have ever done their very best for him , as they do with all thier horses. To be honest it is a tribute to them that both of them lived as long as they did - on the day we rescued them and took them to Bransby they were in a bad way. After the vet inspection there with both of them being given a bidy score of 0 I fully expected a phone call at any time to say they hadn't made it. In fact we thought Carrot may be PTS in the field and not even get to Bransby:o

RIP Carrot & Spud - sleep well lovely boys :)

Here are some piccys from a visit I made to see them both :)

At the risk of sounding like someone on a soap box, the reason Carrot and Spud had such a wonderful last few years is because of donations to Bransby Home of Rest for Horses.

Without the publics support they would be unable to probvide such first class care for horse like Carrot and Spud.

I know money is tight for everyone at the moment but please please take a moment to visit their website, their on line shop etc and do anything you can to help.

This is not the time nor the place to be plugging Hovis' book but I would like to let you all know that the book has raised over £5,000 pounds to date for Bransby to enable them to give other horses like Carrot and Spud a chance. A great achievement which is enitrely down to your amazing support - so thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Bloody marvelous Tinselunicorn. Didn't they just look fantastic!!

Can you put some up from when they were rescued for a comparison and reminder.

They look so much better in your photos compared to the photos I printed off and walked around Burghley Horse Trials all those years ago. The face of the pore BHS lady who I showed and she nearly showed me her breakfast in return. Mind by that night both were in tender care and lived on in warmth and care to the end.

Run Free now Carrot, at peace with Spud.

If Andy is out there anywhere reading this, its thanks to you that they both had some lovely final years X

Sad news, but he and Spud had a happy last couple of years and he was put to sleep before he lost his dignity and was unable to get up. Those are wonderful pictures Tinselunicorn, hard to believe it is the same ponies as those skeletal creatures that were first found.

RIP carrot, I think it is credit to bransby that he had 2 years with them

here is a before pic

Oh bless, RIP Carrot, I'm sure he is enjoying himself up there with Spud again.

I think the help HHO gave to Carrot and Spud was one of the best things I've been involved in on this forum, it was brilliant.
And Bransby did wonders with them, they looked so well and happy and I'm so glad they got the chance to be happy again.

Good lord, poor poor souls. Thank god someone saw them and took action. Bransby pressies will be doing the rounds in this house this year - thanks for the nudge Hovis and Sids mum!
