I've just heard today that one of our veteran horses who is 23 yrs old, is to be destroyed this Wednesday. Although he hasn't been on the yard for very long I am devastated. I can't believe after Wednesday he won't be around to 'chat' to. It's gonna feel really strange without him.

do you know why ?

Apparently, he's not interested in anyone or anything anymore???? That's as much as I know. TBH I haven't spoken to his 'mum' much about it as I don't want to upset her even more than she already is

Cases like this are sad, but it will be best for the horse. Ive seen horses that have had to be PTS for similar reasons and its always devastating for those that knew the horse. Even upsets me when I dont know the horse. I think the worst bit for me was seeing the horse being led to where the deed is to be done. The horse just seems so innocent and unaware of what is about to happen that its heart breaking:(

I'm typing this message in floods of tears as I can see him now being led into the field for the deed.
I looked at him today and he hasn't got a care in the world. Little does he know what's coming

Dont worry about him its so quick so painless that he will know nothing of it. I know it hurts to think about it but remember the vets wouldnt do it if it wasnt best for him. Will you be there? If you are then I advise just not looking, Ive seen horses being PTS and its very strange to watch and hard to except its died

If your not there then just remember all the happy times and the horse will live on for ever in peoples memories

I'm not going to be there, no. Even if I could be there, I don't think I could be (if you know what I mean).

Like you say I'm just gonna remember all the good times.

Yogibear - thanks for 'listening' X

Yeh I know what you mean. I don't mind seeing animals put to sleep, I find it nice to be there in the final moments, but its all a matter of opinion I guess. Some people find it hard... understanderbly, and I guess seeing it on many occassions kind of takes the feeling away to an extend, of course its different if you know and love the animal. But don't worry Im sure you will be fine, just rember him as he was when he was happy, and remember he is in a better place now and the suffering is over:)
