Sad story...

Yes its a heartbreaking situation they are in .....

but it would have been prevented with insurance.

I am going to donate in any case but at the end of the day this dog would not be in this position if they had insurance.

I commend them for taking the dog in .... well done.

But you see cases like this all the time and its so sad that these poor animals have a uncertain fate due to the a small monthly fee being over looked.
 
Oh and I didnt mean that they deserved the dog to be taken off them I just meant that I would put the dog in my care and make sure it got everything it needed ...... (If i won the lotto)

I hope the poor thing isnt in any pain .
 
It is true that it would have been prevented with insurance....

but there isn't much they can do about that now

I'm sure they are well aware of what they should have done to avoid this situation now with hindsight... Am so glad my puppy is insured - but I have just realised my horse isn't... so am going to sort that out today!

I'm still waiting to hear what the current situation is with Lulu

honestly please get your neddy insured - the bills are just hopelessly big for a flippin big animal !!!!

If I hadnt had insurance last year I would have been screwed and so would my neddy !! :-)

If anything , lets hope this sad story has made people think about getting insurance and then at least some good has come out of it .
 
Another idiot here, because I would also pay £6000 for my dogs op, as long as she was going to have a good quality of life after it. As I said in my earlier post, my dogs are not insured at present, though the horses are. Of my 3 dogs, 2 are oldies so cannot insure them any more. The other one is under treatment at the moment but will probably look at getting her insured if there aren't too many exclusions.
 
I really dont understand why if the vet does it for free then they have to be rehomed, just because someone cant afford to pay the bill does not mean they dont look after and love there animals, personally i would rob a bank before having to part with my dogs, but we are not all the same, and it does not mean they dont love and look after there pets, they just cant see a way to pay the bill. Its very sad, i cant imagine having to make that agonising decision to let my dog be rehomed just because i wasnt rich enough, do rich people love and look after there animals better? i think not!!!!!
 
I think u missunderstood....the vet does not carry out the treatment for free......It is paid for on my mams rescue bill....she receives no funding.....and she certainley is not rich

as ANN-JEN said she pays for the treatment from her own pocket and takes the animal home at times, to carry on the aftercare.....as well as the 20 odd dogs she has in her care that she pays for.
She cannot repeat this over and over again for people who simply cannot afford to pay their vet bills, at the end of the day it is the animal that suffers.
So when someone presents a pet that they cannot afford to pay for or follow up treatment.......then the animal needs to be with an owner that can afford possible/future vets bills.
As people have mentioned.....they would find the money from somewhere and I dont think they would class them selves as rich....just responsible.

I am confused. The dog needed an operation that would cost thousands of pounds. The owners can't afford it, but now the dog doesn't need an operation after all. But now they can't afford food for it? Presumably it would have been fed if it hadn't been injured? And why no phone?
 
I know - I'm confused as well about the operation.... But I think there seems to have been an issue with the Vet.

RE: the food - it's not that they now can't afford food - Its just that they have alot of nursing to do - with alot of extra things needed, so would appreciated help with anything as they are obviously paying for the vet bills so far etc etc.

no phone because no money....

Fractures of the pelvis can be grouped into 2 basic types. There are those that affect the weight bearing part of the pelvis and those that affect the non-weight bearing part.
Basically those that affect the non-weight bearing part of the pelvis will heal naturally with cage rest. They might heal a bit wonky but that doesn't usually cause any problems unless it was a valuable breeding animal as it might reduce the space for a pup to pass through.
Fractures that affect the weight bearing part of the pelvis sometimes need surgery - especially if the fracture involves one of the hip sockets for example. Some of them can still heal naturally and sometimes its worth waiting a little while to see how its going to go.
Obviously this dog had other spinal and nerve related damage that had already been operated on which meant it wasn't a straight forward pelvic fracture case in the first place. The other injuries mean that the dog is unable to get up, needs turning over from one side to the other frequently else you can get muscle damage, bedsores and other problems from the dog lying too long in one place. The longer the dog is recumbant the poorer the outlook becomes and so the vets obviously felt that it was either do something about it or put her to sleep. In the time the owners have been attempting to raise the money, it sounds like the pelvis is starting to knit together naturally and so she might not now need the op. She's still far from out of the woods from the sounds of things and it can take 6-8 weeks for the pelvis to heal naturally so she's still going to need a lot of nursing care until she is able to manoeuvre herself a bit better.
I hope this might have made things a bit clearer?
 
Just read all the diary entries on Lulus site and the owners really did try their hardest to sort out funds and now it seems someone has agreed to pay the bill so Lulu can come home, on the understanding that the owners will repay him. I know there are reasons and it is a business at the end of the day but it does seem a bit poor that the vets wouldn't let them do this yet a complete stranger is willing to fund her treatment.
